Right clever ones....I have clump of chives growing in lottie that I haven't come across before and was wondering if anybody else have it or knows about it..
Yes they are definately chives,,but doesn't grow as tall and the "leaf" is hollow as in normal chive but it is not round..flattish shape...they are more greyish green rather than normal nice dark green . They have never produce any flowers so that doesn't help with recognition... so only way to multiply is devision.
No..they do not bulb in the base anymore than normal chives..
No..doesn't taste garlicky neither..
??
Thanks Tim..but no..not like those...leave like quite delicate..and much shorter..I know how wild chive looks like and it is not that neither..
I have clump of these growing in my lottie when I first took over..years ago..and now I have few different sorts chives growing,,but they all flower part this..
They also have sort of brown "sock" around them ..papery skin that "normal" chives have very little..and not that obvious anyway..
everlasting onion maybe. chap on our site has these and they are like you describe.
Oh...I'll have to google that and see if it comes up... ;)
'Welsh Onions' aren't flat?
No not everlasting=welsh onion
These do not form bulb..nor these are evergreen, they only grow about 20-25cm tall
Some of my "normal" chives grow twice as tall..and they always flower..these do not..
Patent them?
;D ;D ;D,,,You bet...if nobody else have them,, ;) ;D
There are many forms of the normal chives as well as other alliums.
I have a white flowered form which also has incurved leaves giving a very different look.
There is also a giant form about twice as big as normal chives and a small form with fine leaves. There may well be others
Garlic chives is a different species with white flowers much later, the leaves are flat and not hollow.
Perhaps you could post a picture of yours?
Couch grass?... it's perennial, flat bladed and doesn't taste of chive [gets coat]

Funny you should say that! I have a patch of multiplier onion 'Minogue' from the Heritage Seed Library and new, small multiplier plants look at bit like couch grass. The whole plant is similar to chives except for the flat leaves and only the biggest plants have bulbs worth pulling. They are a bit like you describe and the biggest plants flower very dark pink, almost purple. They look like a type of leek, rather than an onion. I have culled my flowers because I am saving leek seeds just in case they might cross, but here is a picture.:

Does yours flower like this?
;D ;D..noo mine is not couch grass.. ;D..definate.... ::) I've done some digging in net and there is couple of cultivars of chives that does grow like mine..short etc....but all of them discribe flower colours....?? I've had it now 12 yrs..devided several times and grown in different places..and no flowers..?!
I have now dug some up again.....potted them and trying in different place..and growing clump in big pot too..if it makes any difference...
.... ::)couch grass... ::)I've got plenty of that too... ::)
Oh...I'll take some photos tomorrow and I'll see if I get some showing up here.. ::)..first time for everything.... ;D
Garlic chives? I think they have flatter leaves.
Thanks Redcoat..but no...those are flat and these are hollow inside like chives but not totally round as chives... ::)..if that makes sense ::)...anyway flavour is just normal chive..
THe flowers are totally different too... white and ubelliferous like other alliums... :)
I dug this old post out as I've finally identified what my mystery 'chives' are... ::) :-[ :-X
Last year I dug few small bits out of the big clump and set them to grow in different place..as this was first time I replanted as just few odd bits rather than just chopped off smaller clump as I've usually done.
And they are Nonflowering everlasting onions.. ::) ::) Now that they have more room they've grown into much bigger and fatter plants..looking like different species altogether.. ::). Original 'big clump' still look like chives.. :-X..so it looks like somebody is having to lift it up and break it up into smaller pieces and giving them chance to grow as they should.
I'm quite chuffed now..I started with chives and ended up with something different and 'better'.. ;D...and it 'only' took me 12 yrs to find out what they really are.. ;D
Looking at my old posting..I never got round to take any photos neither :-X

Enough for the seed circle? Fascinating ;) Glad you finally know what they are.
Enough for the seed circle?...well, I have to see about that, but they don't really bulb as such so it might be bit difficult for that. I've sent you PM ;)
