Title: Are my tomato seedlings okay?
Post by: mpdjulie on May 04, 2010, 14:01:44
Just got back from my lottie and I noticed that three out of forty tomato seedlings are looking a little droopy.  I don't know whether this is characteristic of these varieties.  Initially I thought that it was because it was hot in the greenhouse - 30 deg C - but absolutely nothing else is wilting.
I have took pictures of each of my seedlings.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

They look like they are a bit hot and thirsty. Have they been watered?

They were watered yesterday evening. The compost is still damp to the touch.  I tend to be very careful with watering because last year I lost quite a lot of bean seeds to overwatering which has made me very cautious.

Could be a bit too warm for them, how big is the GH?... Also how long have they been in that pot?... It might be that although the topgrowth has got bigger the roots haven't had to catch up yet or if just transplanted maybe there was some root damage and the high temps are making it worse.....

The greenhouse is 2m x 4m.  I potted them up about 2 weeks ago.

Just a thought, it may be that there is not enough air flow through the GH.
If you are not able to get down there often then leave a vent open ither side of the GH to allow sufficient ventilation.

They weren't nearest the glass, were they? We had a sharp frost last night (near Derby) and the odd leaf that escaped the fleece in my greenhouse showed signs of damage. I hope they recover for you.

Don't know about stripped Roman but Green Sausage is notoriously lax.... can you check the roots... sometimes compost surface can be damp but rest of pot isn't.... I'd soak them for 1/2 an hour then put to drain just to make sure the compost hasn't dried out under the surface....  :-X

The compost on  a couple of photos seems to have gone a bit `crusty` so that will not help if you are watering from above, tease it up a bit and add a bit more.

Also some varieties just don`t look `pretty` as young plants. I`m not selling many Opalka as they look awful just now but they will produce a great crop of tasty fruit

Thanks everybody for your advice.  I can't see that I am actually doing anything wrong so I'm guessing that they are just supposed to look that way....hopefully.

Yes wispy looking foliage like Green sausage can look a bit odd.
I just took a picture of one of my GS, not the best picture and its a little more forward, but it has that look about it.

In comparason, Maskotka, which looks more like a tomato!

I think I've got some striped romans, got them in the swap and thought it said "special roman" but think I misread it!
Anyway they are decidedly droopy compared to the other varieties growing alongside them but seem quite healthy otherwise.
Hope this might help  ;D
