Thank you Robert, I thought that was what I'd done - I shall go to the computers board and play around there!
I've never mastered using the quote button so I'm experimenting on this board, take no notice of me.....

The smiley doesnt get rendered to an image until you post or preview - you will see the brackets and other letters/puncutation until you click on post...

The help section accessed via the (http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/Themes/classic/images/english/help.gif) button at the top of every page explains how all the posting options work, what the buttons do etc...
http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php?action=help;page=post

The preview button allows you to check the layout of your message before it is posted or if you do post something but need to change it then for an hour or 2 you will see a (http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/Themes/classic/images/english/modify.gif) button in the top right hand corner of your post, clicking it allows you to edit your post or the (http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/Themes/classic/images/english/delete.gif) allows you to delete your post.

when you 'insert quote' the quote will appear in your text box between a [quote and a [/quote] and you can edit the quote within to just use part of it if necessary for instance if you just want a small part of a longer quote.  ;)

Obviously not like this!  How do you get the bit you're qouting from to appear in a nice neat box?  I too have tried this before and never got it right.  But at least I can do smilies now! :D

For the quote to be in a box it needs quote tags either side so it looks like this.

Obviously not like this!  How do you get the bit you're qouting from to appear in a nice neat box?
[/quote]

Which is displayed like this.

If desired you can edit the quoted text by deleting anything not relevant like this which is the same quote as above but I deleted the words "Obviously not like this!" & corrected the spelling of the word quoting"

Yes, but can you get a "[/quote]" in a quote ? (not that there's any reason you'd want to)

No, well not unless you add something like bold or italic tags to it as above which is why I used code tags to show the layout of the quoted text you would see when typing a post.

I'm still not grasping how you actually operate the insert quote mechanism!  Sorry for being such a technophobe!

There are 3 main ways you can insert quotes.
Either press the (http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/Themes/classic/images/english/quote.gif) button on the top right hand corner of a post to create the quote automatically. If you have already started typing your reply then you can scroll down through the previous posts & click on the "insert quote" link in the relevant post to add a quote to your reply.
Secondly you can press the (http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/Themes/classic/images/bbc/quote.gif) button to create the tags when you are typing your post if you highlight the text in your reply you want quoted before pressing this button it will put the tags either side for you if not then you will have to cut & paste them into the right positions.
Finally you can just write in the tags either side of the text yourself.

Yes, but can you get a "[[b]/quote[/b]]" in a quote ? (not that there's any reason you'd want to)
