Title: Ants nest in barrel filled ready to sow carrots...
Post by: kippers garden on May 02, 2010, 19:31:52
Three weeks ago i filled 4 barrels with lovely compost ready to sow carrots in.  I went to sow my carrot seeds today one of them is filled with loads and loads of ants an ant eggs!  I chucked loads of the eggs on to the ground but it was impossible to get them all out.

Is there anything i can do?

Stop worrying. They like bins at this time of year because they're nice and warm. They do move about, and you could try digging about in the nest, which they don't like. But they're not likely to bother your carrots.

Ants tend to nest in dry soil so a good soaking should do the trick.  Failing that, boiling water will kill them off.

If you have any fish, feed them the ant eggs.
