Title: Growing in compost bins?
Post by: grannyjanny on May 01, 2010, 15:23:10
As we only have a half plot I need to maximize space. We have 2 wooden compost bins, one full of manure the other composting down. They are both 3' X 3'. I would like to plant a couple of squash but OH (he who must be obeyed ;)) says the bins need the lids on or the rain will leach nutrients. We've been watching Geoff Hamilton ;). What do you people think please.

put an old compost bag as a top on the bin, cut a small 'X' in it, plant through that!! (You'll both be happy)

The bins on our site seem to be covered/uncovered in equal measure.
We have grown courgettes and pumpkins in our heaps and they always done well.
Ours is UNcovered by the way. :)

I'm using one of my compost bins to grow potatoes in, it's filled with used compost and a load of huge worms.  :D

Tell OH that nothing is going to leach out as if there is something growing..leachables are going be used up..and that is a good thing... ;D..Beside you can still use grass clippings on top as much so more good stuff is added... ;)
