Title: The first asparagus spear!
Post by: Mushy Pea on May 01, 2010, 12:16:30
After waiting three years before harvesting we have decided to pick one.

We don't know how long they should be but we only had two spears so far and this was the biggest and so here it is.

Is it a tad long? What is the optimum length to pick at?

Thanking you in advance of your advice.

P.S. It was lightly fried in butter and served with an egg and some ham.....

what size they are when you pick them varies on when you are going to the lottie again, because they do grow quick,i have picked from 5" to 14".

I usually pick them when they about 4-6 inches above the ground level. clear a little soil from around the spear, then a sharp twist whilst pushing the spear over a bit will snap the spear off at the crown level.

I have one solitary spear come up, I had given up on them and to tell the truth I had forgot about them, then I turned round and it was there, all on its lonesome, standing up right like Billy no mates.     ;D ;D ;D
