I put in 16 one year old asparagus plants last spring and it looks like the heavy winter here in Glasgow might have killed them. One plant has put up a spear but no more signs. Is it likely that any more will come up or should I cut my losses and shove more in where the others were and this time cover them with straw till they're established?
Are you sure they should be up now? Mine are on their fourth year and there is nothing above the soil yet.
I have a big bed of asparagus and they all originate from the same original seed.
We have had one feed and there is another to be harvested tomorrow.
BUT there are loads of gaps. Asparagus are odd the way they appear in bits and pieces. I would wait before making an irreversible decision.
Yes I have just been up the lottie and fear that most of mine have not survived. I think I might have put them in too deep though so have just taken a layer off. I gave 2-3 left over ones to a neighbour and hers are amazing!! REally thick and tall, so clearly she did something right and I didnt. I am going to wait a bit longer though as a bit of a firkle revealed one coming up
I put ten new crowns in a couple of weeks ago and seven are now through... but only about ten of the old twenty have shown yet... we have our first cutting for tea in about 15 mins...... :)
I have thirty crowns and have about half of them up and I live in bedford so I would hold on
until mid may at least before you do anything drastic-tugboat
I don't have any asparagus except for some tiny seedlings, but looking at other peoples plots, nothing but the odd single spear seems to have appeared, and I am down south, so give them a bit more time.
Sawfish I planted new crowns in the autumn (Edinburgh) and none are through, but my transplanted old crowns are all up. the new ones may be too deep. I'll check in the next couple of days. But basically I'm waiting till mid May. The new ones are Guelph Millenium which I understand is later. The others are Gjinlim.
The south side is obviously sunnier Sawfish - I've got three - count em - three spears up on my three yr old plants. I'd wait a bit longer; I thought most of ours had died last year then they all came up in May.
Last year I sowed a load of seeds, they ended up in 3" pots in a big tray in the garden of my folksd houdse (where I was living at the time)... Then in the hecticity of moving house they got left behind... last thought I had about them was "well that was 99p wasted then, I'll have to re-sow."... about a week ago..... Went there tonight to pick up more of my stuff and had a look in passing, and stone me if about half of them had surviverd... We've watered them and they'll be copming to my new place on Monday when the folks are visiting ,I was already loaded up when I saw them....
That should get me a year off the cropping... they'll prolly spend this year in big pots for a while, I'll need to make a bed for them....

I spoke too soon, I have the tips of 5 shoots appeared :)
I'm in the South and have eight fat spikes showing through from my 3 year old plants, but from only three of the 12 plants. Looking forward to harvesting them at the weekend for my first helping, and hope that more of the plants start throwing up some spikes soon - I shall assume they have survived, given that some are sprouting, so suggest you also give it a few weeks before giving up on them. Good luck....

Asparagus is very hardy and is not killed by frost.
I sowed my seeds in 2006 and so far have had 1.5 Kg this year (see the photos below)

THEY LIVE, THEY LIVE! At least most of them do, so I've replaced the 6 that died out of the original 16 and added 4 more. Giving me a total of 20 plants.
