Title: a different rhubarb question
Post by: aquilegia on April 27, 2010, 08:13:28
I split my rhubarb crowns in early 2009 and plant the divisions in pots ready to move house and garden. I planted the crowns last Autumn in the new garden. Can I pull them this summer or should I wait until next year? I have a fairly big crown, approx 6in x 6in.

Hi Aqui,

your plant is probably best left alone this year to establish itself properly, having said that if your plant looks really healthy it shouldn't mind if you pull a few leaves later in the season, let it get well settled first.  Enjoy!

I'd be tempted to take some if they have had all Winter to bed in... just don't strip it down completely...  :)

I agree, give the crowns a bit of a feed with chicken pellets etc and later pick a couple of stems from each.

Righty. I did mulch it a few weeks or a month back. Can't remember, but it's in my diary. Will give it some pellets. The stems don't look nearly as strong as they used to be, so I'm sure it needs more time to build up.
