Title: Rhubarb
Post by: Manouche on April 23, 2010, 20:32:34
Can anyone give me some advice about my Rhubarb please.
It was looking pretty healthy nice green leaves etc but has suddenly sprouted flowers, pink in colour.
Has my Rhubarb had it's day or can I just cut those flowering stalks off the plant.
I was so looking forward to Rhubarb crumble this season.
Help needed please.

Remove the flowers stalks as soon as you see them! They seem to be very noticable this year.
Your rhubarb should be okay and I'm sure that you'll be enjoying crumble soon!  :)

It doesn't hurt to chuck couple of handfulls of chicken manure pellets and give good watering...that should get you rhubarb to push new leaves rather than flower stalks...this dry weather has made it bolt early..

strange, 2 of 4 crowns has bolted - much earlier than last yr.  Annoying.  i think last yr i cut the flower bit off and it continues to fruit happily.

Yes mine had more flowers than I have ever seen. I chopped them all off and the plant is thriving. It was much manured over winter, wonder if that had anything to do with it?

Cut the buds off, don't let it flower, and it won't affect the crop.

A very Phallic stem rising through the leaves... if it flowers it looks a lot like a dock...

Hi Gwynnethmary You'll know it when you see it, mine was actually rhubarb pink very tight flowers in a tall spike.

Hope you get some good crumbles this season.

Have done as advised, cut them off, dug in chicken manure and gave my plant a good drink so fingers crossed.

Have a great day guys.
