Title: Tomato Crazy
Post by: Jayb on April 23, 2010, 12:11:43
Like many, I'm besotted by growing and eating tomatoes. So much so I haven't even admitted to myself how many I'm growing. I love some of the better known varieties but delight in trying new to me varieties, whether they are new hybrids or Heritage tomatoes from around the globe.

So far this year I'm having a bit of a striped theme, a green theme, some unusual colours theme, oh and what might do well in a hanging basket/bag/pot theme!  As well as still on my quest for the ultimate cherry tomato, one that might rock Sungolds pedestal for me!  I've also got a few types I'm growing out on the go and some super super Heritage varieties I'm really pleased about trying.

Amongst others I'm growing, I'm very much  looking forward to tasting home grown Camone. I tried these tomatoes earlier in the year and I thought they were outstanding, very firm texture whilst being juicy and sweet with a great tomato flavour. I've saved seeds and I am looking forward to seeing how they grow and what their storage is like. They hands down beat any other tomato I've eaten winter time and I would be extremely happy if mine taste anywhere near as good, even mid summer.

As part of the green theme, I can't wait to taste and compare Green Doctor, Green Doctors Frosted and Green Zebra Cherry. Although the Zebras are in the striped theme too!

So just wondering what tomato/tomatoes you are growing this year that you are most looking forward to?

Oh well..this years selection...Sun Belle, Stupice, Black Russian, "Irish Delight", Super Marmande, Sugar Lump, Reise, Banana Currant, Austin's Red & Yellow Pear, Volkov, Morgage Lifter, Ceylon, Greenwich, Mexico Midget, Yellow Butterfly, Daffodel, Bloody Butcher, Double Rich, Garden Pearl, Legend, Alaskan Fancy, First in the Field, Fargo, Marmande, Sannibel, Nebraska Wedding, Sub Arctic Plenty.phew ;D!...and...I have some surrogate growers in lottie who grows another 30 odd varieties for me for just seed harvesting... ::)
Half of my this years selection is purely for seed saving..well the fruit too, some of them new for me,so I'm looking forward for those  and only couple are varieties that I will grow every year just for the culinary pleasure. Daffodel and Austin's Red Pear I have my hopes set for...I love cherry-types .
Oh yes...I grow hanging basket/ container types too..just to get taste buds going before the maincrop is getting ready.. ;D ;D
Oh yes no;2....and I'm growing what ever you send me... ;)

for a tomato to rival sungold I suggest T&M's tomarvellous. I grew them last year and they all got eaten straight from the plant. Hubby didnt even save me any for seed saving.

So this year I have T&M's tomarvellous and their sister variety tomazing, Sungold of course. Country taste & harbinger these two were hubbys just pick a packet choices.
Ive also got from Tatianas -  Black Cherry, Matts Wild Cherry, Anmores treasures (tumbler), cosmonaut volokov, and Chernomor

I'm trying a few American heritage cultivars this year that are new to me, so I'm interested how they turn out. Berkley tie die sounds interesting, as does Delicious (grows to a huge size apparently), and I am also trying the Irish version of Gardener's Delight which is a supersweet version apparently!

I have grown "Irish Delight" now for couple of years...It is perfectly nice tomato...but..It propably is just me.. but.. the proper Gardeners Delight still seem to be a tad better, yes Irish one is sweet but I like a bit of tang too...I'm having another go this year again..just to be sure..and If I'm not 100% happy with it..well it have to go..this hobby of collecting seeds is getting out of hand..
Delicious is good..if anybody like they toms large,,well this it is..even average fruit will grow good size.. ;D...One of those "1 slice will cover slice of bread" tomatoes..

Boring selection of tigarella, gardeners delight and moneymaker. First year growing my own so have stuck to tried and tested ones. Space is at a premium, but am gathering ideas for more exotic ones from you lot in preparation for next year  ;D
Title: Re: Tomato Crazy
Post by: goodlife on April 23, 2010, 19:40:11
No..not boring...they would not be around if people would not like them..I think we all have some of the usual ones...I do..all three what you have...and even I do grow some fancy ones..I still think...(yes I dare say so)..that gardeners delight has taste that is hard to beat...It is one of the few that I grow almost every year..
Lot of the "exotic" ones are just lookers...they do not necessary have that wonderful flavour... :o

Not boring at all, 3 sorts for your first tomato season is great, think where you may be in a years time. After this season you can decide what you liked about each, what was not so great and then either grow them again if they were your ideals or look around for others that meet your want/desire list? If you are looking for something to try later on let me know :)

Sounds like you are producing for a seed shop Goodlife  ;D Lots of interesting varieties and I agree cherry types are scrummy.

A few to keep you busy then Deb P  ;D

Nice list Amphibian, I'm liking the sound of JBTxOB, let us know how you get on.

Micro toms look gorgeous, I've got a couple of smalls but not quite that tiny  ;D

A repeat of last year's:
Black Krim which I liked the best for taste,
F1 Polfast (because it is very early and finished early Aug.),
Anna Russian (a big ox heart type but flavor doesn't have enough acid for my taste though hubby likes it) and very tiny and few seeds,
Pruden's Purple (medium sized, very good flavor) but maybe not a robust enough plant
Burpee's Better Boy (because I had some seed lying around)

New for me this year:
Cherokee Purple
Stupice (because many of you over the Pond raved about it)
Subarctic (heard it was very early, then after I bought it I  heard it tastes terrible  :-\    )

Hi GrannieAnnie...Sub Arctic Plenty is design to be very early...and with earlies..well the flavour is not the best..but I would not discribed terrible neither ;D There is quite a lot of toms that flavour changes a lot if not picked in right stage or grown in wrong climate etc.
But it does do what it says...grow in cooler conditions..and provides quite well in that situation ;) I don't know about your climate and growing conditions but I cannot fault the humble tomato. I treat it as early taste for the season...and I wait pantiently untill the more "taste bud bursters" catch up ;D ;D

Another one here who can't really admit how many tomato plants I'm growing (and have you come completely clean Jayb?  ;D) I've got
Japanese Black Triefle
Kenilworth/King George
Isis Candy
Black Cherry
Taxi
Olivade
Clear Pink Early
San Marzano
Costoluto Fiorentina
Orange Banana
Queen of Hearts
Champagne Cherry
Stupice
Ananas Noire

Read on a tomato site the other day (think it was an American one) that you only needed 2 plants per person and 4 if you were pasting/canning. Hmmmm. Only 2 of us here.......

My daughter can polish of the fruit from about ten plants on her own, my black cherry's appear to yield no ripe fruit, I am sure it is an illusion.

Grannie - If you want early fruiting varieties with some taste, then you need some like Polar Star, Siberian or even the humble Kotlas.

I usually grow about 2 dozen varieties, but I'm easily led astray with the addiction.  ;D

Yes there is worm flavoured ones...but I'm just out of seeds for those ;)My 4 cuckoo marans love any flavour though..and I have 2 mongrels who haven't had a proper taster yet..but yes...we are all tomato crazy here (trying keep in topic)..dog likes tomatoes too and she is not fussy what sort they are as long as they are served with few bisquits, meat & gravy..anything goes...my bees have shown a bit of interest for tomato flowers but they are only ones in family that are not that much bothered about the fruit ;D

What is it that people think that something more widely available is not exciting....of course it is...it own grown...will taste so much better than shop ones and you normally get more than you would buy...Now if you can eat belly full of tasty toms and have pleasure of growing them...yum...if that is not exciting I don't know what is... ;D ;D

Out of 2 cosmonaut Volkov planted I only got one germinate.

I have mixed my chernomor and my wild cherry together, or should I say my over zealous twin toddlers didnt follow mummies instructions and I wasnt watching. So ive got two of one of those varieties and one of the other. Im guessing that the small one is likely to be the wild cherry.

My toms this year.. well none, at least not yet.

Because I was not  certain I would get a Canadian lottie this year I wasn't sure if I would be able to grow anything other than a couple of Tumblers in hanging baskets but... I did promise to start a selection of different toms for  my best friend and her married children who have always grown basic garden centre stuff so I planted just two seeds of the varieties below. The idea was different shapes, colours and harvesting dates. Of course it also gave me the satisfaction of being able to plant for someone!!!

Orange Banana
Whippersnapper
Japanese Black Trifele
Purple Calabash
Mary Robinson German bi color
Piccolo
Black Cherry
Fireworks
Tommy Toe
Big Beef
Ananas Noir
Sugary
San Marzano
Manitoba
Jersey Devil
Bush Early Girl
Ferline
OTV Brandywine
Matina
Jolly
Lillian's Yellow
Rose Beauty

Of course both seeds germinated and as I now DO have my Canadian lottie I will be able to keep the second plant for myself..

meanwhile.. I shall still be planting this week what I really want for myself..list to follow.

And my other half thinks I have a tomato addiction.  He has no idea.  ;D It barely even registers on the tom-crazyometer.

This year' I've got 11 varieties growing away with that wonderful tomatoey zest for life:
Gardener's Delight
Golden Plum
Golden Sunrise
Ildi
Italia
Maskotka
Moneymaker
Pineapple
Roma
Super Marmande
and Tigerella

Now suffering tomato envy reading all your lovely lists, particularly for the lack of any black toms in my lot.

I'm trying to work out where I'm going to fit all of mine!
ahhh I love dark coloured tomatoes! My favourite so far is 'Purple Cherokee', which looked STUNNING, with a rosy-pink base, darkening in deepening purple brush strokes to the top. And the flavour was incredible. They were fat juicy beefsteaks which were so sweet but also a bit winey/smokey. Just generally amazing.

I can't believe that when I was a kid I thought tomatoes were disgusting. I'm totally hooked now and can't wait for those little plants on my windowsill to grow up and produce a big crop this year! Will post about the results of what I'm growing in a few months time.

Good life, I took everything I had, I wasn't sure wether I was allowed and daren't ask so we popped packets  inside teapots, shoes, evrywhere, it was a heck of a job when we unpacked , mind you a lot of it had been bought there. When I flew I had some rare seeds that were sent to me after the furniture left..they travelled very well in my bra!!

Of course I have been back a year so have added some now.

I do find most everything can be got these days, I think if you are serious about seeds you have to think and shop globally, or develop swappers in other countries.

Our outside night temps have been running 3.3 to 7 degrees C. (38-45 F.) and
our tomatoes have been planted outside a couple weeks now. Most of them
are looking like they're holding their own- of course covered with plastic milk jugs
at night. "Cherokee Purple" are especially bushy and growing strongly, but strangely
"Subarctic" are just sitting there  despite their brave and boastful name.

Well, there's only two of us (and a nearly four month bump, but that's not eating much in the way of toms yet!). I was planning six plants, which gave us a decent crop for eating/canning last year, but am now running at 10 I think as I haven't quite given enough away. Bit worried about how I'm going to fit everything in as we don't have a huge area. Are just in the process of moving and the new house has no garden that isn't patio or woodchip so this year will have loads of space for grow bags. Next year may have greenhouse so might be able to be a bit more adventurous with the selection.

Luckily I haven't "adverticed" too much...I have some regurlars who get plants from me and I've been happy to keep to that...actually I have found some people almost scared to grow something which name doesn't sound "English"..or in line moneymaker etc.. ;D

I thought Sub-arctic Plenty's trick was being developed by the US armed forces to handle the insanely long days they get in midsummer in their Alaskan and Greenland bases (if they still ahve Greenland bases), most plants can't exploit the daylength because their CO2transprt system gets clogged up with oxygen, they need a dark spell to sort themselves out....SAP is just more efficient (rather than having the alternate transport systmes that some plants do)

I am being reasonable also so have:
Marmande beefsteaks (haven't had luck with them previously but hoping this year for no blight)
Moneymaker (why do people moan about this? I am trying them, if they are tasty, the seeds are cheap enough, if not, guess I haven't lost much)
Gardener's Delight (trying on A4A recommendations  ;D)
Tigerella, which i grew last year and loved
Totem, which is a bush type with small tomatoes
Pannovy which need pricking out now
Herzfeuer which i got from Lidl but which gave me lovely sweet salad toms in the past couple of years
and something called an Ananas, which is a yellow beefsteak, someone saved seed for me, so it's a bit of a gamble, might turn out totally weird.

I stopped doing the long Italian types as I found they got the rot too much. Also I really love eating them raw rather than cooked  ;D

My `display` has been out for a couple of days now.

If I had the room on the blackboard I woud have chalked..

Tomato* Plants 60p

Cucumbers £1.15

*But if you want Moneymaker keep driving as they sell them at the Garden Centre three miles away for 79p.

As it is it`s just the top two lines without the asterisk ;)

I don't mean to be avoidant, but I can't cope with a list at the moment as I'm evading how many I've got growing in the hope it will help them all fit in! It does seem to be a ridiculous amount of varieties though and several grow outs  :o I don't know what I'm thinking of, just obsession I guess. If I'm brave enough I'll add some in later.

What I'm most looking forward to changes on a daily basis and seeing flowers starting to open is just a tease, but brings it all that little bit closer  ;D

Liking your lists though Jeannine and MarkfieldR. I can't wait to hear how quickly they progress.

Cleo that's a fab idea, just wish I had some people going past.

Hi everyone from sunny Portugal!

I have sown three types of tomato this year - Tigrella, Black Cherry, and some seeds I bought in Crete around 5 or 6 years ago!  The Tigrella have been slow to germinate and not so strong looking.  The Black Cherries are doing well and as for the Cretian ones!  Well, I thought that as I had had these big beefsteak type seeds for SO long, I had better sow quite a few as they may have poor germination.  NO WAY !!  They popped up first from their slightly larger reddish seeds, in large quantities and now I have grown them on in pots, they are really big strong plants!  I just hope they taste as good as the ones we found in the restaurants out there !  I am looking forward to our first summer and first veg here in Portugal!

That`s obscene,I know F1 seed is expensive but all I can say is ` a fool and their money`

Jeannine-it`s Ananas Noir on probation.

And sales here have gone crazy !!-after years I seem to have converted the good folk of the region,no Money Maker or the `usual` suspects` but toms I like(well one has to have a few `tumbler`) 200 plants sold in a week.

Thanks grannyjammy I will have a look on there. I think I have a bit of space left for another few tomato plants.  :D Of course looking at seed sites makes you want more doesn't it? I will have to resist or take the back wall off the house and replace it with glass.

Cleo, I was dissapointed with Ananas Noire but I have grown it again to make sure it wasn't a one off seed. I found it bland  almost tastless and the skin seemed soft..not at all what I expected.

What did you find wrong?

What did you find wrong?

It didn`t crop well and the flavour was nothing special. But it was in the least favourable spot in the tunnel so I am giving it another chance this year
