Has anyone grow the above rose. If so what do you think of it please.
hi, i have grown bush and climbing EdH. The climber is fairly stiff with a habit of growing very upright and just blooming at the top. A bit of a blackspot magnet too but the flowers are lush, fragrant and slightly nodding. We had this rose as a child and I can't help noticing that it has changed in that there are less petals in newer clones (16-25) while I remember much fuller blooms. It is a good rose though with a decent repeat. Are you growing a climber or bush?
I was thinking climber but have just changed my mind. What do you think of the bush? I've just ordered Falstaff & Gertrude Geekle.
it is not very often when a rose sport is better than the original but in Etoile de Hollande, the climber definately surpasses the bush. The other 2 roses you have ordered will stay fairly compact with a little pruning but will, given a chance, act as climbers putting out great long canes and reaching 3m high and wide over some years. If you are embarking on a rose adventure, I suggest you check out gardenweb and use the antique rose forum - a mine of information from some really experienced rosarians with no agenda to sell you stuff.
Etoile is one of our roses on the arch between the garden and the lottie Janet..
It is far too vigerous for the 8' arch... Doesn't get too much black spot here though...
I was thinking about putting it against a west facing wall. We had a new boiler fitted & the vent has now gone. I fancy something very smelly as I sit & watch the chickens ;). Would you call it a climber or a rambler David.
it is a climber (climbing Hybrid Tea). Please get the climber rather than the bush as the bush is very small, less than 1m and inferior to the climbing sport. Do not prune it too hard and it will do well for you. very fragrant too.
It may get mildew against a wall... if dry at the roots. Ours doesn't but it's not on a wall... and at least where you are west facing usually means wet... :-X
