Title: What is the air like now where you are with the volcanic ash problem
Post by: GrannieAnnie on April 16, 2010, 22:28:17
Since I'm over the Pond I was wondering how the air is around you if it is as bad looking as the photo in the paper today of the plume.

I could smell it yesterday and woke up a little wheezy (asthma) this morning. Second day with all airports closed in UK and now across Europe as far as Romania. mother Nature can still bite us in the bum when were not looking.

Not really any evidence of it here in far south west.

If the wind stays in the same direction then we'll be getting more spectacular sunsets - but nothing yet.

I liked it when a reporter said - when can we expect thing to return to normal? and the expert said (nearly) IT'S A BL**DY VOLCANO!?

I really miss the planes going over, I love to sit & speculate on the stories of  the people on board. it is so quiet.

No sign of any ash around the Salisbury area.

We still have army helicopters flying around but then they are low level and do not have jet engines.

When we had no planes going over after 9-11 the intense quiet made me speculate what lovely silence folks lived in prior to cars, trains, planes etc. Just the gurgle of water and buzzing of the bees...must have been serene. But they probably didn't think of it that way, just were itching to get out of the pasture and see the world maybe.

It was interesting to read you don't have an ash problem and hope that means you won't have a blocking of sun for this Spring growing time.

I have had a couple of times when I thought that something smelled very slightly different.    But out this morning early and it was a super lovely crisp frosty morning.  Hopefully the frost overnight took the moisture out of the lower air and any dust with it.

The sky is now blue blue blue.  It is a glorious morning.  But the birds did not sing in the dawn this morning here.

But history gives various causes for concern.

Birds now singing their little hearts out.  Very cold this morning so they must have had a lie in.

No transatlantic flights piling into Heathrow.

Went out to water the garden and I thought the air smelt odd and it's cooler today even with the hazy sun out.

Film of dust on the car, no point in washing it off until the whole thing has blown through.

There's a noticable film of dust on the cars,  no overflying aircraft in or out of nearby Heathrow and no contrails in the clear blue sky!  :)

Clear blue skies and dust on the cars. The Thames was very foggy this morning  - the fogs horns were sounding from about 4 am this morning - I am a bit tired ;)

Cant really notice anything here in Dorset. Nice clear blue sunny skies for the last few days, but hazier today though. Hard to tell what's weather and what's volcano related to be fair. We aren't under a flight path either so haven't noticed much difference to normal, although we are near our local air ambulance base and that was grounded  until yesterday so it was a surprise to hear it take off during the afternoon yesterday.

Personally i am mildly asthmatic and suffer dust/pollen allergy (OK,hayfever!) occasionally. Breathing has been fine, but have had itchy eyes lately. Hard to tell if that's tree pollen or volcanic dust causing that though.

To be honest, while the fine weather is very nice after the cold winter, a change in the weather would be welcome, if only to blow the dust cloud away and get us back to normal. Some rain for the garden would be nice too.....

We are almost under the main transatlantic flight path into Heathrow so normally there are a pair of flights every few minutes.  Skies normally well streaky with jet trails by this time of the morning  Nice to see sky so clear and blue.   I sometimes lie in bed and watch them as they pass.

Another glorious day here.  Blue blue blue from horizon to horizon.

Decided to wash dust off car worried it might be slightly acid it was surprisingly difficult to wash off, seems to be slightly sticky.  Quite different from dirty from road which washed off easily.

The small ones are restricted to below 2000 feet at the moment.
Around here we have no large aircraft or military going over.
Skies are clear and the sun is out.

Our skies in Kent, have been wonderfully clear, but they found after September 11th that the grounding of flights actually increased sun intensity and temperature. Our car has a fine film of dust on it, but I've smelt nowt.

Expect we're going to have a dire winter because of this.

The M20 was packed with foreign lorries and coaches today.

What are the supermarkets going to do, without all teh Kenyan lettuce and Chilean raspberries. I read 20m tonnes of food has spoilt on Kenyan runways that was destined for Britain. I bet the *fatherless children* don't pay the farmers for it.

There is not a lot of difference here, we are about half an hour from Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool and a variety of small aerodromes used by Aerospace and hobby fliers.

With British weather the skies are never totally clear and deep blue for long. If I did not know there was an atmospheric problem from the news I would not have noticed anything. Now I am looking for it.

It seems quieter but I won't be sure until they start off again if it was my imagination.

Apparently an Eastern European airline has flown through it and reported that there is no noticeable problem. The grounding is precautionary was admitted by those who took the decision and it has to be said that we can't risk lives with aircraft stalling mid air can we?

It is a mixed blessing to some. Eurostar and Ferries are handling more traffic. Taxi firms and hotels are winning and losing.

The big loosers are the airlines, then the growers who can not transport their fruit and vegetables.

It might make some people aware that the fresh exotic content of their menus are not locally grown.  I am convinced many of them think they are.

Personally I don't trust the airlines, they are haemorrhaging money like there is no tomorrow and many of them are in serious financial strife already, they need this crisis over quickly. It's a bit like trusting safety data from petrochemical and pharmaceutical studies on their own products.

A Met Office plane encounter dangerous levels of ash, the Met Office pointed out that the ash has pockets of density that reach dangerous levels and there is no way for commercial jets to avoid or detect these. The commercial 'test flights' prove little, Western Europe hosts thousands of flights on many paths every day, how can a handful flights on a few limited paths really demonstrate safety.

wouldn't it be great if we had to stop using planes, and had to change to AIRSHIPS and BALLONS
