Do you need a special sort of shallot to overwinter? Or can you use just any sort?
I've got golden gourmet from Kings.
I think most will overwinter -but some are said to bolt (Sante -for instance) and should be planted later. Should say on the packet.

moggle, i have 'jermor' in situ now. i've checked back on the packet and it specifically says for 'overwintering'. would add that i'm quite impressed by the number and health of the green shoots-they seem unaffected by the frost so far.
they are in the bed next to the runners, which have been 'got' by the frost.
The old saying was: plant them on the shortest day and pick them on the longest.
In out first season on our allotment we planted onions and shallots in February and got a fantastic crop. Then we heard about overwintering ones so tried these in our second season.
Wasn't impressed at all, we didn't get many good sized onions or shallots. We put it down to the extremely heavy rain and snow we had late last year that bent the stems over and therefore probably not allowing the onions to grow properly.
