Title: carrot fly netting
Post by: themantowin on April 13, 2010, 14:36:04
I am growing carrots for the first time I am growing chives in the same area to try and keep carrot fly at bay. Dose any one now if old net curtains can be used instead of the netting you can buy to keeping the carrot fly away.

I used an old Mosquita net I found in acharity store and it worked well, I think your net curtains will be fine as long as the lace pattern holes are small XX Jeannine

Spray the netting with something that has a strong 'perfume or stink of any kind' it will help.

I was advised (and it worked) to grow carrots between the carrot fly seasons. Also Mariolds work better than onions as an off putter. Try growing onions alternately with marigolds for top security.
