Title: Building a bumble bee nest?
Post by: gp.girl on April 10, 2010, 18:13:44
Is it a good idea to build a bumble bee house on the allotment? There's loads of queens flying around at the moment and they keep looking at the edges of the raised beds in a hopefully way :)

No honey bees  ??? are allowed on the allotments so its wild ones only.

I've got some instructions somewhere......

But I guess it will have to be done pretty soon.

Well if you can stuff the nest box with bedding that has mouse urine on it then it will increase your chances of them using it. The queens home in on the smell when they are looking for homes in spring. I rescued a few bumble bee nests last year and each one was in a mouse or rat nest....and a bit pongy.
