Title: Lemon grass plants...
Post by: ginnyknit on April 07, 2010, 17:27:45
On 'Grow Your Own drugs' last night they rooted a piece of lemon grass in water then potted it up, has anyone tried growing it? I fancy doing some of the more expensive crops this year as my Daughter and her partner are ex chefs and are camping out with us for a while. Also got some pak choi on the go, will be interesting to see how they do.

I grew a few from seed some years back. They get quite big, need a big pot, and are not hardy, so all the hassle of overwintering in the greenhouse.
I slung them in the compost after a year or so, as I'd rather use space and effort on more productive plants.

We started some off from shop bought stems, we rooted them in water, well we tried for months then forgot about them, then noticed they had finally rooted. I stuck them out in the ground then potted them up for winter. I kept them in a very dim and cold room over winter, I didn't water them, and they have survived just fine. They'll be going back out soon.

I brought a plant back from Malaysia three years ago. In the summer I keep it on the allotment in the ground, and it bulks up well - then dig it up for the winter and keep it cool and dry indoors in a large pot. I haven't used it very much yet, but I have acquired a Thai daughter-in-law so I think its time is coming.

I nearly lost it through neglect last winter, but the surviving few shoots did well in the ground over last summer, so this autumn I am hoping to have several large pots. I love the flavour and the smell, and there is plenty of space for it on an allotment.

I used to try rooting bought shoots, but never managed it.
