I have a wigwam ready for my alderman's peas. There are 5 canes in it and I guess the canes are around 1ft apart. How many peas would you put up the canes?
also i have a similar setup for sweetpeas - would it be the same amount?
many thanks !
2 peas per cane would be my guess...
10 Alderman plants will not give enough pods for a meal size picking. Not a problem if you just want to graze on them straight off the plant, but for culinary use, I'd aim for more like 30 plants, which will need more support than 5 canes.
Thanks that's really useful. So how many canes would 30 plants need? I understand I'd need string or netting around the canes but I'm finding it hard to visualise how much space each one would take. Would I need 3 x wigwams of 10 plants each or could i have 15 peas on each wigwam?
I plant a pot of peas by each pole, with a dozen seeds per pot if I ghave that many. If I've got loads of seeds, I plant a dozen pots per wigwam. When sowing peas in rows, they go pretty close together, so there's no need to give them extra space on a wigwam. I find the plants tend to climb halfway up the wigwam, then straight up so they don't get specially crowded at the top.
wow thanks. looks like i'll need to sow more peas then, that's even better :)
I'm with Robert on that... about a dozen peas in a 3" pot, two pots per cane, 6-8 canes per wigwam... lots sown, lots more back... if you save your own it's not an issue, you can save a good coffee jar from each wigwam and still have two or three freezer trays of eating peas... not to mention the "testings" as you walk past... ;D
