Title: Parsley - to overwinter or not!
Post by: JerryB on November 15, 2004, 15:20:57
Have a couple of good heads of parsley in a raised bed on the lottie - should i pick and freeze it all now or can it be left over winter? Any ideas gratefully received! ;D

I was going to give it a try in a cloche -but maybe I should freeze some to be on the safe side.

I grow both the flat leave and traditional parsley. They are sheltered under a large bay tree so the worst of the frost is kept of them. However the flat leafed type is not as tough as the curley.

The curley sees us through the winter and then runs to seed in the spring. The flat leaf gives up the ghost in Jan/Feb normally.

I start new plants in the greenhouse in Feb/March for planting out in May.

I have grown Parsley in SE England. It's a biennial and should last the winter fine and go to seed the following year.

We grow both types & are never without it. Under cloches, it survived several days of -8F this year. Along with the Fristina lettuce. But we re-sow each year. = Tim

I usually bung a few chunks (very technical this!) into small pots and bring one or two at a time into the kitchen, just so I don't have to traipse out into the garden on a cold night. When one pot is looking worst for wear, I put it back outside and bring another one in. They seem to be perfectly happy outside, though (Greater London).

I had a giant poll of flat leaf parsley last year, it came through the winter just fine despite the fact it was out in the open. I harvested the whole thing in spring (chopped and froze it), it came back again and started flowering.
