Title: how do you store your seed?
Post by: netty on April 03, 2010, 13:55:21
Hi all. Up until lately my seed pkts have all been kept in an old tin which has been ok but i tend to forget whats in there ,how old they are .and when they should be sown etc. So ,i have bought a cd storage bow which seems to be the right size for the job ,and some index cards. The problem now is I cant decide how to put them into catagories.Any suggestions would be very appreciated .Thanks .

Mine are in 3 boxes..for flowers, peas& beans and third for rest..
In them I bundle with leggybands all in groups eg. toms, brassicas, lettuce,herbs...
I have several large sachets of silica to keep moisture off and boxes are kept in cool condition..
I used to keep seeds in fridge..but collection has grown and I do not fancy buying own fridge for seeds only... ::)
Couple of times a year I go through what I need to replace or throw away..
If you going proper index way..I would store by when to sow...just an idea...

thanks for prompt reply,i agree seems to make sense to put them in order of sowing, wasnt sure wether to put them into groups such as veg ,salads ,flowers etc but i think i will as it may prevent me from chucking away pkts of seeds that are out of date cos forgotten abouy them  ::)

If and when your collection start growing out of your box then the grouping might be easier option... ;)
;D...no matter how you manage you seed you will forget some anyway... ;D ::)

Netty,

With the seeds, I keep mine in old ice cream tubes that have been washed out.
1- veg seed
2- hardy perennials
3- biennials
4- annuals/ half hardy
Inside each tube they have been sectioned to allow me to choose the planting times of each.
12 sections for the months of the year.
