Title: spud bags bought and spud bags made
Post by: bennettsleg on March 30, 2010, 22:53:04
Well, hello again it's been a while...

I was after getting my muddy paws on some of those spud bags (small garden with long narrow patio bit, y'see) but when I went to the garden centre I was told to not bother and to use a compost bag instead. So, having planted some Pink Fir Apples at the nearly bottom, rolled down the top and stabbed a few holes in the bottom I note that the soil is a little too damp for my liking and I hear tell that frosts are coming...

Any tips? Have I been sold a pup of an idea?

Nop, its a cracking way to grow spuds in a small environment.

When you say wet, how wet ?
What soil have you used ?

If you make sure there are holes in the bottom of the bag so that it can drain, I wouldn't worry.
Unless the soil is heavy clay, I wouldn't worry.

No, compost bags work just fine, I put any extras I cant fit on the plot in them. I turn the black side out. Ive found you need to put more holes in than you think. If youre forecast frost, drag them under shelter or wrap in fleece/bubblewrap or stick a carboard box on top.

I've been naughty and dissuading people from buying spud bags when in the big DIY places.  I've always done just fine with compost bags and rubble sacks.
