Title: I've Got it Covered ????
Post by: Buckeye Girl on March 28, 2010, 11:28:49
I have searched the web over and can not find an appropriate answer to a simple question,  so where else can I turn?    ???

I have garlic that has recently sprouted, roughly an 1/2 inch so far.  I don't know whether I should keep it covered against frost or leave it be.  I suppose the same could be asked of my onions, which have only just started to break the ground.

Given the time of the year I know that frost can not be ruled out. Would it be best to adopt the policy of covering everything for as long as possible at the moment?

I have just planted some potatoes and a bit hesitant in leaving them uncovered. I assume that the will be ok. I have grown them in bags before and never bothered.

Many thanks

Quoteso where else can I turn?

Well you got that one right!  ;D

QuoteI have garlic that has recently sprouted, roughly an 1/2 inch so far.  I don't know whether I should keep it covered against frost or leave it be.

When did you put it in?

Seems a bit late unless it has been planted recently!

Which ever way! You don't need to cover it it needs cold to split the bulb into cloves!

QuoteI suppose the same could be asked of my onions, which have only just started to break the ground.

No problem here either.

You might want to cover them with a net, birds and rabbits are partial to new growth!

Depends what you mean by 'everything'

If it hasn't germinated it should be OK its new growth that generally has to be protected from frosts!

As previous answer they will be OK until the new growth emerges!

The garlic have only been in the ground since March 14 - ( My Mothering Sunday treat at the allotment ), same for the onions.

I was on the right track then.  Good to know.  As it is my 1st season I would rather try to pick up on any problems early on.    ;)

Mine went in in January and we had a terribly cold period since then, the tops started showing about 3 weeks ago, we had heavy frost since then and they are going great guns. I hope in fact that the cold spell means that they will give great bulbs this year.
