Hi folks, my Blue Hopi did pretty well last year and I've got a fairly large number of seeds as a result of self-saving. I thought I'd give a red variety a go this year, but that means I've got tons of BH spare....
Looking for shelling beans other than broadies, borlotties and butters and soys if you've got any
chrisc
Ought to mention, I've put some in a propagator and 8 of 8 germinated in a couple of weeks
I have some cherokee and black pencil pod spare..
cherokee is better for shelling and can be eaten as green beans too..
black pencil pod is better as green bean but does quite ok as shelling...the beans are totally black though...
whoops...I'll take my words back... :-[
Just had a look into my box...the shelling beans I'm short and those I mentioned are "green" beans and they both are black seeded..
I do eat them as "dry" beans too...looks a bit wild in chilli...
sorry about that...but you are wellcome anyway if in need...
I am actually buying Borlotties today so if you fancy a swap p.m me.

Already got borlotties, but send me an SAE and I'll send you some Hopi's!
Just found some Brown Dutch I think that is more of what you're looking for!
Dutch Brown Beans were great for me, though I don't grow them now> Last time I grew them in 2008, they were fully ripe and ready to shell first week in August
Interested in the black pencil pod, all I've really got to swap ATM is the blue hopi though, might have some yin-yang dwarfs kidney beans if I can remember where the pack is...
chrisc
Yep happy to swap some black pencil pod beans...
I just found some Ernie's Big Eye dwarf beans.."good resistance to disease, chunky beans for drying or eat as fresh young pods"...from Heritage Seed Library..some of them?
I just forget the treasures I have in my seed boxes ::).
If you find your yin-yangs.... ;)
If they don't turn up PM me.

THe Dutrch brown and Marvel of Venice turned up today, Many thanks.... The Blue Hopi is on its way!...
Apologies to Goodlife, I forgot to bring the yin0-yangs to work, will try to remember tomorrow, your BH are sitting in a pack on my desk drawing comment fromj co-workers :D
chrisc
Many thanks chrisscross seeds arrived just now generous pack so will share with some plotty mates.
Here's to that hot summer they mentioned yesterday!
Glad to here they got through.... Don't worry if some of the plants are "stripey" , I had about 50" of mine last year that were variegated to some degree.... also the blue colour only forms as the cobs ripen, up until that point they are as yellow/white as any other corn.... I thought I'd not got any blue at all three weeks before the harvest :D
Goodlife, your hopi and yin-yang are in the post as of this morning, enjoy!

Hi Goodlife, the Black Pencil and Ernie's Big-eye turned up today..... must say the Big-eyes are one of the most handsome beans I've ever seen..... hope they keep their colour when cooked......
chrisc
"..... must say the Big-eyes are one of the most handsome beans I've ever seen..... hope they keep their colour when cooked......"
You know, now I think about it...I don't think I have eaten them as shelled beans...I would be supprised if they didn't loose their spots...does ying yangs loose their colour when cooked?

Unfortunately yes.... it's one of the ways of working out if they're cooked.... bit like borlotties really, if you can still see the markings, they're not done yet.....

I like the sound of the big eyes but already have beans coming out of my ears. Please can someone save some for me for next year.
