Hi all
I'm trying to find the average price you pay for your council
allotment plot and size if known in square meters
thanks

This is still current. (http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/smf/index.php/topic,57122.120.html)
Averate rate for a 5-pole plot is somewhere between £3.88/pole and £5.39/pole and is most likely £4.64/pole, and if you get a ten pole plot the rate's about 20p/pole cheaper.
17 pole plot £42 (£2.47/pole), but OAP concession £21 (£1.23/pole)
A pole is 30.25 square yards, and the standard allotment size is 17 poles. This plot size was arrived at centuries ago as it is considered enough land to grow enough veg for a family of four.
Todays useless fact:
An oxgang was viking measure used in the Doomsday Book, and was the area of land that an ox could plough in one season. Since oxen were usually used in teams of eight, the area that eight ox could plough was called a bovate, or carucate.
So an oxgang was about 15 acres, and a bovate was 100-120. Just to make it more awkward, parts if England not under Danelaw used the virgate, which was twice the size of an oxgang (because you used two ox instead of one), and a carucate was then known as a Hide.
Now that is definitely Todays useless fact - I'm loving it ;D

Wonder if I could slip a few mentions of oxgangs, bovates, carucates and virgates into conversation with my friend while we walk the dogs in the park this morning?
:D :D
Most research implies that these terms covered yeilds (?sp) for taxation purposes not modern measures of area... the "acre" was not a statute term and varied by @100% depending on the soil... smaller on heavy, rich soils, larger on light, poor soils... :-X
Mines 25m x 10m and I pay the 'princely' sum of £20 ;D
We pay £6 per year for our small plot. it is the best bargain ;D
I think mine was £25 for 1/2 a plot inc water, I've just extended it to 3/4 and rent is going up by 20% this year. I bet there is going to be a lot of upset people on our allotment.

Mines 365sq meters and we pay £25 per year
Mine's a nominal 600 square yards (roughly 20 poles), and this year I paid £40 including Association membership for myself and wife. So that's a total £2/pole.

thank you, i'm rubbish at maths and did wonder!
£40.50 and that includes the water for 6 poles. ;D ;D ;D
£4.50/pole. I have 10 poles.
I currently pay 15 a year for about 10 poles on a faily basi site (we've got water troughs scattered through and legend tells of a site strimmer adn rotavator but I've never seen them) in Oxford...
Where I'm moving to in Swindon (and have my name down even before I've moved) 5 poles will cost me 19 a year .... on a similar site as far as I can tell.
As I work in oxford I'll be keeping the Oxford plot for at least another year (Our site doesn't have a waiting list, but the spare plots need as much breaking in as mine did :D...

We pay £11.75 inc insurance & water. It's a half plot 18' x 56'. We get it half price as we are OAPs. Don't know haw many poles we have ::).
I pay £20.00 a year they tried to put it up this year to £40.00
but apparently they have to give twelve months notice before it can go up.
So next year it will be £40.00............ ::)
i have 15 poles and its £5 the lot
just sent my cheque off last week
Thank the stars your not in Camden, the waiting list there is 40 years. If your kids put there name on the list when they leave Uni, one will be available when they retire :S
I suppose that I'm tempting fate by saying that I've had my small half plot, which is about 30 by 60 feet, nearly three years and haven't paid anything yet! :)

I get my 2 allotments free of rent and water charges(2 x 10 rods) for being the association secretary, but I pay my nsalg subs. ;)
thanks all keep them coming
my local council are making some new garden plots not allotment
and charging £70 to £170 depending on the size
it; look like the name change is allowing them to charge more
thanks

thats pretty good, thats 8 poles at £1.58 a pole.
Hi - Can someone please help me with a couple of calculations?
I've got two plots, which I know the metre size of, and I'm trying to calculate the poles.
Are these correct?
1. 4.5m x 20m = 90 m2 = 2.95 poles
2. 6m x 17m = 102 m2 = 3.35 poles

No. 1 pole == 25 m
2, so:
1. 90 m
2 == 3.6 poles because 90/25 == 3.6
2. 102 m
2 == 4.1 poles because 102/25 == 4.1

I was being rough on the calculations. A pole is 30.25 square yards or 25.3 sqm.
You'll get your wrist slapped by the admin for points scoring if ur not careful, i did when i corrected people :D
10 poles at £33 for the year inc water. Morley, Leeds.
£3.30/pole
10 poles @ £50 for the year incl of water.
Oh...mine are (2) 40 poles together with a cost of whole £7.00 that's £3.50 a year per plot.
They are not council allotments though...and I have purchased the the plots for one off payment £25 each..but after that just £3.50 as a membership fee;D
If and when I decide to stop doing them I get the value (£25/each)back!! ;D ;D...but for me its lifetime commitment, if body can keep up..
I've spent a fortune on mine over the years ::)
But the amount of enjoyment i get out of it is worth all of it!!!
my plot's 27meters x 7 meters cost £30 a year inc water and didn't go up this year ;)
I'm waiting to see whether I get half my money back now that mine's been divided into two (at my request). I'm not holding my breath! ::)

It's likely that you're obliged to give some period of notice to quit, maybe 12 months, and if the agreement says nothing the common-law default is 6 months, and you can only quit on the rent day. I've never heard of a council insisting that the tenant work the plot for their notice period, but it does mean that they don't have to give you any money back when you leave early.
Our plots are tiny 5 x 12m (2.5 poles is that right?). £36/year. Feel envious of plots where you have room for sheds, seating, ponds etc but it's better than nothing.
Mines a half plot (27ft by 50ft) just outside norwich
Rent is £12.50 a year. Water, a key and a carpark is included but nothing else.
A refundable £25 fee is needed when taking a plot on and returned when returning a plot if no major clearance work is needed.
I think its more than reasonable! :)
QuoteFeel envious of plots where you have room for sheds
We are not allowed sheds but things have been disappearing from the communal one.

Is this a private site, it seems a bit pricey.

Yes, at £15/pole that's very expensive. Here's a comparison of the rents (for a ten pole plot) in boroughs around Newbury, so you can see that £15/pole is more than twice as expensive as the most expensive (which is Newbury ;) ).
Yes it seems that our allotments are expensive! They are not private but they are run by our own association which took them over from the town council 3 years ago. I think the association charges the same rent the council did. The water's free.... ::)
£21 for half plot in Bexhill.
Just taken standpipes away and replaced with trough like things that you can just about stand a watering can in. Yet to see if rent goes up this year.
i just got allotment rent letter today last yr it was 32 pounds for a 1/6th of an acre this year its 52 pounds for the same plot 20 pounds increase is abit much almost 40% rise and they have withdrawn pensioners consesion so there increase will seem even bigger to them
oh well such is life grow em big all the best mal
For a 1/16 acre plot with water 1st and 2nd year was £25 with a huge free delivery of the soil conditioner the council make ( bit of a free for all and never managed to nab any)
rent went up to £35 in nov and will rise to £45 next november..no more free condition but least the paths are being redone
Still a bargain I reckon
mine is about 20 meters by 15 and costs about £11 a year. ;D
Just had my rent letter for one of my plots.
3.35 poles at £15 per year (includes water rates - which is estimated for now)
We pay £23 for a 1/2 plot which includes mains water. This will rise to £25 over the next 2 years.
Council have recently installed a loo & septic tank, which is god news for anyone caught short ;D
my plot is 10m by 40m and cost £53 this year inc water, skip, shop, loo, and social events.
