Title: Volunteer garlic?
Post by: artichoke on March 08, 2010, 08:31:50
Here and there, garlic is sprouting where I missed it when digging and harvesting last year.

What do people do with these? I have separated the little sprouting cloves and replanted them in rows. I expect them to grow on into single round garlics this year. Has anyone else done this, and what happened?

That is fine, hopefully you didn't damage any roots when you split them, so everything will be great for a crop this year.

I use them for green garlic.

Even if you did damage the roots; alliums don't mind.

Ahh...I was just going to say that...
I have permanent garlic corner where I "chuck" left over garlic and bulbils to grow and I use the green growth as spring garlic.
I can eat garlic all year round, first as "greens", then as "wet"(fresh), later as mature and dried and some I pickle for the later on before the greens come up. ;D

Permanent garlic corner sounds like a very good idea, and thanks for all the replies! I'll set one up today. Yes, I could use them as greenery, but I want them out of the way, and to grow a bit bigger.

I have a few volunteers this year, from cloves that failed to sprout the year before. Amazing that they will sulk in the ground for a year, doing nothing, then spring to life.

I had a washout withh garlic last year but I've got volunteers now... I'm more worried about white rot than anything else.... they're near my Catawissa's which makes me cranky.... I'll probably eat them as green garlic, they're where I'll be growing squash there this year (need to move the Cat's come to think of it)
