Title: my first murder
Post by: gwynnethmary on March 04, 2010, 18:34:21
found a big slug today whilst digging in our new third of a lottie, and I killed it- chopped it up with my spade!  I had to grit my teath and screw up my face to do it, but I thought of all my babies on the windowsill at home and just went for it! Does this mean I'm a real gardener now?

lol - I am squeamish about doing the deed too - but it is the slug or you veggies.

Well done

I hate all that green stuff that oozes out, but then you realise that they were your precious lettuces.

Unfortunately they hunt in packs.

Haven't come across any chickens yet-don't know if I could save them up!  I think I may have to just steel myself every time I see one, although I do feel a bit guilty!I also have quite a lot of eggshells saved for when we plant out the caulis etc.

Quotereally big slugs dont do all the damage,

I lost almost a whole row of dwarf beans to huge black things.  Every night they ended up caked in them and every night I was a serial slug killer.  They even ate the beans.

set beer traps. Then go out as sun sets - they are making their move on the traps at that time.  Promptly snip in half with scissors.

:-X but effective.

I have been saving egg shells all winter also.....

Oh and I often use sand around tender plants - slugs don't like it.  beware rain washing it away though.

I'm not too sure I could do the business with scissors!  The thought makes me cringe!  I have heard about beer traps- sadly the lottie is about a 15 minute drive away and I'm more likely to be there during the day rather than at sunset.  I think we need to eat more eggs!

I have abiding memories of my mum walking round her garden every dawn and dusk with a cup of tea in one hand and a very sharp knife in the other!  :)

Some of the big ones are really hard to squash.

I pick them up with a peg so I don't have to touch them, pop them in an empty milk carton overnight and then empty it in the bird feeder the next morning, the thrushes love them and they are all gone in seconds.
killing the slugs and feeding the birds guilt free. ;D

I squash em all the time in my kitchen, by the back door. Usually in the dark early hours, when i'm half asleep, when I've woke up and need the loo and am bare foot.....eww
