Allotments 4 All

Forced to be in bed this weekend by a bug, thought I'd try and nail down what I actually plan to sow/grow this year in moments between sleep and going to the toilet.... ::) I thought I had been quite good and restained myself....but then again........... ;D What do y'all think?

Wow, Deb P, with a list like that it sounds to me like your running a temperature!!  When you come out of the 'fever' might you remember you've only got a window box!  ;D

Gosh that is some list especially the tomatoes-how big is the greenhouse??

That is an amazing list.  You must have a huge space.  Have you grown Mrs Lewis's bean before I grew it last year and was very pleased with it.  And eight types of shallot!!  But no runners?

Blimey Deb. We could (sorry OH) do with some lessons on how to fit lots in a small space ;D ;D ;D. Talk about being conservative. We have 60 YES 60 b....y swift potatoes because he liked them last year & didn't like one other we tried. How I wish I had my own plot. Shouldn't grumble really he is preparing an area of the garden so I can have some chooks. We only have half a plot & the other half was just used for raspberries last year.

I'm hoping to have my plot divided in two by the council as it's too much work for the time I have, and trying to cut down my list of veg is proving difficult, but I'm only planning to grow a few spuds this year and prioritising the things we like to eat most,so:

courgettes/squash
carrots
parsnips
french beans
onions
garlic
leeks
broccoli,
plus the perennials- rhubarb, artichokes, asparagus,rasps and strawbs.

Mmm, I'mthinkingthat's toomany for the space already!

plus toms,chillies, herbs and salad at home.

Varieties will mostly be whatever I've got left from last year!

I grew Purple Teepee last year, they were fantastic and are on my list for this year too.

keepondiggin: I have two greenhouses, 'big' one at home I can usually fit in 36-48 tom plants, plus 15-20 chilli and pepper plants on staging. Also have a small greenhouse on my main plot, and will hopefully have another one on my 'new' half plot next door by the summer. OH was given a oldish greenhouse by a client who had bought a new flash one, it will need about half of the glass putting in but will give me a some more room. Plus I grow a lot of plants spare for the plant sales!

chriscross: how did I guess you would notice that! ;D Get on that norty step!

digeroo: I love shallots! I now don't grow any maincrop onions, we use shallots in cooking instead, so I have given the space I previously allocated to them to more shallots. Mostly I grow overwinter (Jermor) types, which means I have a good amount of spare room in Jun/July to follow on with squashes/sweetcorn etc. This year I'm trying some spring planted sets as well, as well as growing the banana shallots from seed. The Mrs Lewis's Purple Podded bean I've grown the past 2 years, as decorative as it is tasty! Not a fan of runners, prefer to grow CFB's in succession which should see us through to the frosts....

reddyreddy: I have one standard sized plot and a 'new' half plot next door that I've been slowly sorting out over the last year. It should be up to full production this year!

Mortality: thanks, feeling a bit more human this morning!

grannyjanny: I use a lot of companion planting and successional sowings particularly in my raised beds to keep the ground occupied for the majority of the time, just have to be a bit organised with my plot plans!

Caroline 7758: I've actually REDUCED the number of things I grow by quite a lot this year and tried to get a balance of things I've grown before and liked and new varieties I'm trying out. I'm deliberately growing only a fraction of tomatoes I've tried previously grown apart from my all time favourites as I had so many I hadn't tried before from the USA....blame Jeannine for that, with her post advertising them!

asbean: I forgot to list the garlic, it was planted out in October! I've used my own Marco cloves, had a huge crop last year that we are still using up.

greensausage: Purple Tepee is one of my favourites, it has always done well and so stays in! I'm trying the Yugoslavian Black DFB for the first time, got it from the Heritage Seeds Library so will save some seeds in case it turns out to be a keeper.
