Hi everyone can someone tell me if i should put my onions sets in this weekend.
it did say feb,but someone said it was to early ???
thanks jj
The usual time to plant them is mid March to mid April, besides which the ground is almost certainly too cold and wet at the moment.
And a warm welcome to A4A! :)
Welcome to A4A JJ. Another vote here for a delay.
Hi JJ, just like to join in welcoming you to A4A :)
Is it the same for both red and yellow onions?
Welcome to A4A JJ... if you want to start them cell sow them and transplant later, reds later than yellow Unwashed... :)
This year we have to ignore the book and plant when the weather is suitable. If you try and plant anything while the soil is so wet you will just make a mess. When I bought red sets last year it said these should be planted LATER but did not say later than what. We did have a discussion on A4A about this with various answers about panting dates some saying dates in March but then you get autumn red sets.
Hi,
I buy the heat treated variety and they don't even arrive until early April. ;)

I agree with Laurie!
I do not work to a 'hard & fast' regime, although my website suggests different but then it is only "a guide"
I look to what is growing at a given time e.g.
When the crocus start to flower I start my 'sowing programme' and when the annual weeds start emerging I plant out such things as onion/shallot setts.
It is not a very scientific way of doing things but it seems to work for me!
