Allotments 4 All

Are there any veg that rabbits wont eat?

My kid's primary school are interested in getting a veg plot going in their school grounds. The thing is, its a rural area and theres loads of rabbits. Hunting is out of the question at the moment, so whats the best way forward???

I've  found that potatoes, broad beans and squashes, marrows, cucumbers seem to be left alone.  Many low-growing crops can be protected simply by covering them with well-anchored fleece.

I would agree with all Doug has said above, sweetcorn is fine once it has started to grow, rabbits just like the juicy young plants!  Runner/climbing french beans are fine if grown in a pot and planted out when about 9 - 12" high too.

I think fencing would be the answer though and this is the best website we found when researching....

We have had no trouble since.  It is also useful to have fencing anyway so the children don't go and "help" unsupervised.

There is quite a lot on here about school veg patches and schools generally can get quite a lot of help with them these days as they are educating the consumers of the future.

I hope that helps, I would imagine some school websites will also have info on them but it is knowing which schools have allotments or you will be doing a lot of searching.

Well there plenty of veg that goes nicely WITH rabbit.............carrots, onions, potato, leeks. If your not squeamish, get a dozen rabbit snares and start trapping them. Rabbits are vermin so its legal to kill them. The loopy bit is that because they are vermin, its illegal to let them go when you do catch one (counts as  'releasing back into the wild')

a good fence is the only none lethal method that is guaranteed to work.
