And now we have two inches of snow!!.
Will the onions be ok?? (they are sets)
My autumn ones were under a foot of snow for at least 3 weeks and they seem to be fine.
Cheers, i was getting a bit worried
Has anyone else planted thier onions yet?
No we were going to do it at the end of the month . I hope it is not to late.
I did not get my lottie until the second week in March last year. So it was nearly the middle of march before I got the onion sets in. They were the first thing I did. Actually they were the best I have ever grown.
Got Long Red Flo from seeds in a very cold conservatory at the moment, and fingers crossed for the Japanese overwintering outside - it's been the coldest winter I've ever known here, but they don't look to shabby.
You've got plenty of time to get your onions in Rosebud, its too wet and cold to put them in yet, they'll end up rotting, I'm going to try to get mine in within the next few weeks weather permitting, as Digeroo says March is fine, even stretch to early April.
If there under fleece Phil they should be warm enough, but how wet is the ground, if its waterlogged I'd take them up and wait a bit, but it all depends on your soil.
My winter onions seem OK and should get going when the soil starts to warm.
;D ;D ;D
I have started, put in the shallots and some brown onions last weekend. Average temps here are now 10-13 deg C so I guess I have a head start on you guys!! I usually plant from end february to mid-march, when I get time. I grow brown onions, shallots and red onions, and this year trying spring onions for the Nth time but this time trying sowing them in the cold frame then planting them out ;)

Sounds lovely. Yesterday it did not get above 1 deg though todays is a barmy 5 already. My onions are still firmly in their paper bags.
Mine are in their bags too - partly due to lack of time, but also the weather, snow, now rain and water-logged ground. Will probably now time them with early pots Good Friday (not sure when that falls this year, but I don't think it's crucial).

It's 10C minimum inside on a windowsill here. My reds and whites are still lounging in the net.
Just checked my records, I planted mine on 20th March last year
