Title: Me and the robins
Post by: Flighty on February 20, 2010, 18:23:21
This morning I spent a couple of hours working on the plot where two robins kept me company. When I went to pack up and leave one of them was by my feet then hopped on to my boot!

I'd like to think that one of them was the young one I photographed last July.

Lucky you, Flighty, I haven't seen 'my' robin this year.  I also spent a little time outdoors today, wasn't it lovely?

Georgie lucky indeed! That's a shame. It certainly was a lovely day but a one off for a while as the forecast is for rain all next week!  xx

Hosta apparently it's a good possibility that it is!  :) Yes I did, and I hope that there'll be plenty more like it.

Lorna I know that you never see robins, which is such a shame.  :(  I always feel that my day is somehow incomplete if I don't see, and hear, one!

I am so envious, our robins  here are as big as starlings and not nearly as red.. Robins have been our family bird since I was a child in fact the only christmas cards I send out have robins on them, I really miss  the birds.

Betula whatever it is makes them our favourite bird, and rightly so!  xx :)

Jeannine like you all the cards I send show robins, and well over half the ones I received last Christmas did as well!   xx :)

In my case Flighty is because home in the UK being Hull I was brought up with a Dad who was a Hull Kingston Rovers fanatic.. their emblem and nickname was the robins,in fact even the mynah bird shouted "up the robins"

So nice to find someone else who buys robin cards.. and there are so many of them too.

Lorna, next time you are in a Garden Centre or pet Shop, look out for Chapel Wood "Woodland Crumble".  It contains dried mealworms which robins really love.  A packet 1.8 kg costs £3.99, but it goes a long way.  You will need to put out a small handful every day.

I know you have a feeding station that John made you but can't remember whether you have a bird table?   If you haven't, maybe you could fix a flat piece of wood on the fence between your house and young Lorna's.  Don't have it too near the house though.  Hopefully a robin will then visit your garden.    ;D

Hi Pauline. Just read this (Thank you for PM) Should have read your post earlier as I have been out shopping. Will be going up town early next week again so will certainly see if I can get that in one of the pet shops. Have put a note in my purse!! Yes I do have a bird table which young Lorna bought me, it stands near my sun room so that should be far enough from the bungalow. Many thanks will let you know how I get on.

We have lost sparrows and starlings, but robins doing well.

I have two pairs in the garden  One pair are very very friendly.   They do a wonderful job retrieving leather jacketrs.

There are three in the hedge near my lottie but they still hasn't got brave enough to come and help me.  I thought they were fiercely territorial so very surprised with three together.

I must say I enjoy their company and they are just starting to sing.

SamLouise thanks!

Digeroo I see a few starlings but very few sparrows. I've seen other reports of people seeing three robins together recently. As you say it is surprising as they indeed fiercely territorial. I'd guess that they're a pair and one of last years youngsters which have stayed together because of the prolonged cold weather.

Could it be a place where  territories meet? Maybe it's on the boundary of two territories, one has paired up, and the other is still single. In theory, you could have four robins if you get two pairs. I've had two on the allotment out of the breeding season, when it was on the boundary of their territories, but I haven't seen three.

I have 3 Robins in my garden.  2 of the Robins meet at one side of the garden at a feeding station and the lone one stays at the kitchen side.  They are not fighting at the moment when they meet to feed.

The Robins are late feeders along with the Blackbirds.  Just as darkness is falling the Robins are down for their seed.  They also like to feed alone and if no other bird is about you will see the Robin taking a seed or two.

I have been trying for couple of weeks to get a picture of one of mine.  when I go out with seed he drops at my feet and quite friendly then he disappears again.  So frustrating.

:D

I often have 4-6 Robins feeding at one time. For the past month or so they have tollerated each other as finding food seems to have been their priority. There has been the occasional skirmish but nothing serious. Now however they seem to be becoming more aggressive towards each other as the breeding season approaches. It will be interesting to see how many stay to nest in the garden this year. For the past few years there has only been one nesting pair.
