I have been looking at upside down planters lately. I figured they could grow off my patio roof jambs and the plant would be accessible. Does anyone actually have any experience with them please, or useful thoughts,I think I have read pretty much all I can about the various kinds that are available for sale.
Wondered about the down side, you know , the things the makers don't bother to tell you.

I was given one from www.rockettstgeorge.co.uk sent it back!
Ha a look at the website. They certainly know how to charge! :o :o :o
Jeannine I know nothing about these planters but I don't really see what the advantage is? I would actually find upside down plants quite confusing! And would they not, anyway, try to turn themselves round? I mean f you plant bulbs for example upside down their shoots turn through 180 degrees to "right" the plant.
Anne ,the possible advantage for me at the moment is lack of space as I am using my balcony. The roof height is too high to put a normal hanging basket up ,then have to reach beyond that, but to try these I could conceivably put regular toms in then I could put the two tumblers I have in one area that is a bit lower and would take 2 normal baskets with fruit that only hangs a wee bit.
Very unsure about it actually.
Reddy, the Canadian ones are nothing like that at all and work out at about 8pounds sterling(sorry I have no pound sign) they are more like nylon bags ,some in a frame like hanging basket.

Ah I see! Well I suppose it's worth a try provided they aren't as pricey as Rockett St George!
EEEk wish you had not put up that link, just got tempted by some of their wallpaper ;D
J, peeps here have high hanging baskets over their front doors, etc. and they are lowered via a pulley contraption for weeding out/watering etc., as do our local shops. I don't 'do' hanging baskets so perhaps someone can give you a link to the sort of thing I mean? Thought that this might solve your problem?
XXX (and I'm still not sure, looking at your recent posting times, if you're up v.v.late, or v.v.early :o)

Hyacinth, I am up..period!!. Not sleeping too well lately, hurts a bit to lay down so after a couple of hours I get up. Tonight I didn't even bother going to bed. It is no good this blooming getting old thing you know, I should have opted out but I think it is mandatory. We should start a thread about what we all used to do before we got old!!
me.. I raced a moterbike, sidecar actually , grass track racing, I danced professionally, did long distance swimming, so why the blazes can't I walk right now!!
It is amazing what you find on the net in the middle of the night,of course I dare not go near e bay or Amazon, I nearly bought a ruddy greenhouse last night, some good it would be if I don't get the lotty!!
Well I ma off to bake cookies..
Night night

Hi jeannine worse half of manics here
Sky Planter - Medium (house plants)
£59.00
don't know if the ones u were looking at were the same price ( thats more costly than our plot fees :o on looking they looked weird I would imagine if you were
on sedation you may think you were standing on the ceiling looking down on them :D ;D be interesting to here if you go for them
......before I got old? Well I could work all day, party all night, have a shower, change & go to work again, no probs.
These days, I haven't even made it to midnight on NY Eve for a few years :'( ;D
we have some plastic, hanging bags, these can be hooked over fence posts, etc, plus we used to have some half baskets that fitted onto drainpipes, last year, we sold baskets that fit onto the house wall..just a thought ;D
before I was old, work all day, 8.30 to 5.30, off to the pub on a friday(17) :o
then to an all night party and into work the next day, used to do loads of sport and walking, I think we all peaked too early, maybe if we hadn't played so hard, we wouldn't be falling to bits now ;D ;D

::) 8) ;D ;D ;D
The placcy bags thingys...they dry out really quickly don't they, if they're the sort I'm thinking of...pouch-type things? Just wondered cos it gets awful hot in Canada in the summer...
wondered where you were for a minute there, Hyacinth..very wooly headed at the mo,
yes, plastic but we put the bottom half of a 2 ltr plastic drink bottle in the bottom to help with the moisture, plus water retaining gel..mind you, she might have a shady bit ;D

I know! I returned the planter gift and exchanged for all sorts of fab things! I do like free shopping!
What about hanging some sort of extenders or chains down from the roof that would support rectangular box type planters or round normal hanging baskets at a good height for picking?
me.. I raced a moterbike, sidecar actually , grass track racing
(sigh! memories, memories..) I remember going to motorbike scrambles on Sundays back in the 50s, I reckon, with a schoolfriend whose mum & dad had a motorbike/sidecar...they went to look at the races - we went to look at the boys ;) ;D

Why do you think I was on the bike in the first place Hyacinth!! It caused quite a scandal having a female side rider especially cos I ad the "" amazing new discovery Velcro"" tapes on my side zipped black leather pants whic regularly popped open as I went round corners horizontal with my toes hanging on the bike!!
Re the planters.. the ones I have been looking at have metal sides much like a hanging basket only much longer, the bag thingy site inside that, the top third has some sort of water holding gadget that drips the moisture through as needed and there is a built in water sensor on the side so you know when to add water, it holds about 2 litres. These ones are much more substantial than all the others I have seen which just look like plastic hanging bags with a hole in the bottom. Thes ones I am looking at are made of fabric.
I want to use the space coming down from the roof overhang, I do already have planters fixed on the patio railing with plants growing up but the other is dead space that I want to try to use, also they would get more light if hung than on the patio, which is quite shaded.
Manics, without all that fun we would be dried up old prunes, I live in a building full of them, they make me feel I am 16!!

Jeannine the planters you are looking at sound much better than the ones I've seen in catalogues, much more sturdy. And it does sound such a good use of space. Unless they are prohibitively expensive I'd give them a go - as long as the fixings are strong enough......
Back off topic - way to go girls ;D
