Title: Runner Beans
Post by: Pesky Wabbit on February 18, 2010, 00:14:16
I was helping another allotmenteer yesterday to clear away last years runners and canes.

There were quite a few pods with seeds in and seeds on the ground.  Will these germinate ? will he have volunteer runners everywhere ?

They'll germinate, but could be knocked off by a late frost.

OMG  :o :o :o :o.

I guess they can just be hoed down though. but it means that space cannot be used this year - or perhaps potatoes.

Why ever not, just plant as normal, if you get any beans sprouting, just pull them out

I guess its no worse than other weeds, but there were litterally hundreds of seeds.  :(

I suppose that it you planted beans it would be difficult to know which were which  But perhaps brassicas they like the nitrogen left by growing beans.  If a bean comes up just knock its top off.

They'd be simple to weed out as they look unlike anything else. If you're growing runners again on the same spot, start them in pots, and meanwhile pull out anything which comes up. If you dig some of the seedlings up carefully, you could grow those instead of buying more seed.
