Is Very Hard To Find!
bought my Mum a laptop and I'm trying to find something to replace her old Quicken (Win95) software. Quicken has been discontinued for the UK. US versions on ebay look fake to me. MS Money also discontinued.
What do people use?
Suit Windows 7 or Linux. I'm working through the Linux softwares. but I don't know anything about accounting or bookeeping ???
I just have my accounts in an excel spreadsheet that I've built up over the years. I found MSMoney quite scary since it would tell me how much interest things had made/would make based on what appeared very spurious information and adjust my "total wealth" accordingly. Made me think I was much better off than was really the case.
My spreadsheet lives in the real world!! ;D
thanks for that - making my own spreadsheet was Plan B (actually Plan Z ;D too much like real work yeuch)
I am still using Quicken 98 but like you said, it is no longer supported in the UK.
I have also been using Acemoney, which is OK (but not as good as Quicken! I love my Quicken!). You can download a free version of Acemoney Lite which only allows you to have one account, but will give you an idea of how to use Acemoney, entering amounts and setting up catalogories.
If you get on OK with the Lite version, then it is not too expensive to get the multiple account version and you have online support.
I decided to play safe an get a more uptodate accounting programm, as I wasn't sure if Quicken would continue to operate when my computer was updated to XP (it did work OK).
I have Microsoft Money and couldn't do without it. I never use it on line and manually put in the interest figures so everything is 100% accurate. I know instantly what money is in the accounts and what bills are due to go out.
I don't use it for shares as I prefer to look at IMW web who hold all mine.
Microsoft money is no longer supported. I looked at something on MSN but it was useless and only worked while on-line which I felt was a security issue. I do not think much of Ace light. I came across something on the Sun edition of open office, where you can go on-line to get financial templates, but it is still for USA users and seems quite complicated. there is something on Google, but again you have to be connected on-line to operate it in their "cloud". I have done Google searches and there seems to be nothing else.
I am amazed as I would have thought that there would be several million people in the UK who had such requirements.
Another package is MoneyDance - haven't tried it myself - think the draw back with it is that you cannot change the dates to get different reports, i.e.end of financial year, end of tax year, etc.
I too use MS Money and have done for 7 years. It's fantastic and 100% accurate... and I know exactly what my cash flow is... Goodness only knows what I'll do when I *have* to find a replacement. Why on earth did they discontinue it???
I'll be interested too, to hear of any suitable alternatives...
Like Anne, I use a spreadsheet - that way I'm in charge. The software packages always assume they know best!
thanks everyone. Amazing how poorly provided for Home Finance is. This is for my Mum. She actually understands bookeeping, but gets confused dot com with computers. New laptop + new OS + new software is all too much, and she's a bit depressed with the whole thing. I'll try some of the Linux ones like KMyMoney. I'll have a look at Acemoney Lite but I want to stay away from Windows 7 if possible
There is also a program called BankGenie which is very good.
??? ??? ??? I,m going for the nuclear option
get rid of windows 7. Install Windows NT 2000 and take it from there
****, ****, ****ity, ****! why does it have to be so hard?
