Title: Pot Bound Lillies
Post by: Jitterbug on February 09, 2010, 22:47:45
Hi all

I wonder if someone could help me please.  I have acouple of pot bound lillies which I planted about 3 years ago.  Is it any good to re-pot and thin them out of are the bulbs now finished?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.  One thing I did notice last year was a beetle on them which I promptly kept squashing.  Will this have infected the bulb?

Regards

Split them up and repot, giving them fresh compost and space. If that was a bright red beetle, it was probably a lily beetle. They attack the foliage not the bulbs, so you're OK. You just have to be vigilant during the growing season.

But feed the white grubs which are its juvenile stage to the robins they love them.

Equally it may be the dreaded vine weevil, white grubs with brown heads, again feed them to the birds and water in some nematodes when it warms up.

Thanks so much for all the replies.  It was indeed a red beetle skinny and longish (but no longer than my thumb nail). Ugly little blighter.

I will repot them - when is the best time - now or wait until the frost has gone?  Also what namatode would I use?

Kind regards
