Title: Ginger - Roots for sale in Homebase

I saw a ginger root for sale the other day, I love ginger! Has anyone grown it and is it easy?  :-\

Hi reddyreddy

You don't need to buy a root all you need is to go to the supermarket and pick up a chunk with a fairly pointy bit and that should root!  (Pointy bit up!)

yes I grew it a few years ago and apart from a little bit of greenery it didn't do much!  I had it in an unheated conservatory.

I have potted on several bits that have grown.  If you leave the ginger root in a plastic bag and forget about it after several weeks you will probably have a green shoot.  The result looks a bit like bamboo and grow several feet tall.  They are a good talking point.  They like a warm windowsill but in the end I always seem to forget to water them.   I tend to end up buying some more roots to eat..
