Title: sweet potatoes
Post by: marie59 on February 01, 2010, 15:52:19
Does anyone know how to grow your own sweet potatoes.   I love them but must grow  them too!!!   Is it at all possible in our climate as I notice they are all imported from the USA and further afield      :-[

just started my s.p, cut in half, cocktail sticks to keep it out of the water, in a glass with water in, covered with a cut off 2 litre pop bottle, when the 'slips' grow, I'll put them into compost, keep them warm and plant them in the border in the polytunnel, here's hoping we get a warmer year than last year for a good harvest  ;D

I cheat and buy my slips in... T+M did such a bad job last year the 12/30 that survived were "free"  :)

::)  Am I correct in understanding that all I need to do is cut a sweet pot in half and stick some toothpicks into it to keep it off the water and it will start growing just like the avo pear pip?   :-[    Can I start them off straight away or is it still a bit too early.   I will be trying to grow them at the allotlment?   So sorry about all the questions but I am a bit dumb!  Thanks for all the help so far .

Slips are expensive to buy, aren't they? An email from T&M offers 10 slips for £11.99, and I guess there is postage on top of that!

We don't grow enough to check how long they store... we dug up @15kg in October and used the last just before Xmas... showing no signs of "going off"...  :-\
