I got some seed off ebay from a guy in Finland.... dunno what they'll turn out like but I've also got a standard Egyptian type in (never seen them produce seeds) and the giant American Catawissa tree onions too (they're the biggest ones I know of and they set multiple decks more often than the standard varieties)... have you tried searching for "top-setting" onions?

Very strong, quite hard too, they make excellent pickles if you can get them in large enough quantities.... dunno if I'd want to eat them in a salad though, they are a bit fierce....

So are they worth having in a veg patch?

I think so. They provide a good source of green onions, and they're interesting. I'd like some other types as well, but then I like growing oddities.

A few Catawissa's near the front of the plot are a great icebreaker, everyone that comes past when you're there will talk to you about them....
