I've had a lot of problems with the wifi, not always reliable in the house and unreliable in the grounds.
I've now installed a homeplug unit in the office, this allows me to use an extension mains lead anywhere in the grounds with another homeplug unit and the laptop (and even the old laptop which is non-wifi). It's supposed to have a range of 200m, so I should be able to plug at a neighbours (three houses away) and still get a good line.
I use these devices and they are great but Im not sure if they will work between houses. They will certainly work on different circuits in the house (house to garage) but going through your fusebox and meter to a house on a different phase probably wont work. Be interesting to see if it does because if it does it is a large security hole unless the signals are encypted - basically an open network..

You're probably right about three phase, however our supply is single phase. It used to be an overhead line but last year they put it underground, it's a bit of a cockup, supposed to be "Permitted Multiple Earth" but it's not.
I must admit that you have made me think about popping round to the greek family next door and seeing if they can pickup my network!
