John and I decided that the time has come to take a few holidays and we have booked for 5 days for our wedding anniversary in April. I am having cold feet now.
Everybody seems to go from here but I was going to keep our trip a secret to the last minute or we will get friends who want to join us.
I picked it for the scenery outside the city and some of the shows, we are not gamblers but that is OK.
Are there any special places I should go,
Jeannine
My son went for a day but unfortunately he's left this morning for Morocco so can't ask him!
We went there for a wedding a few years ago. The city itself wasn't really for me, although I'm pleased to have been there. It is astonishing, whether or not it's your personal taste.
The best bit by far was a small plane flight that we took, out over the Hoover dam and up into the Grand Canyon. Pootled around on some quad bikes (all very slow, no overtaking, no racing etc...) and went to the edge of part of the Canyon itself to peer down. We were fed some kind of spicy bean stuff, then flown back into town. It snowed when we were up there - in the middle of the desert!
If I went again, I'd try to sort out a way to be up in the Canyon for Sundown, as Bob Dylan said:
"...You find Woody Guthrie in Brooklyn State hospital,
You find God in the Church of your choice,
It's just my opinion I might be right or wrong,
You find them both in Grand Canyon, Sundown"
we went 6 years ago for my daughter's wedding, you take from it what you want, we don't gamble but the hotels are fantastic, we used to do 2 per day, that was how long it took, don't use taxis all the time, the buses are air conditioned and lovely and clean, ignore anything you don't like and enjoy yourselves, it's something you have to experience, can't describe it ;D
that said, I would go to the venetian, the luxor(egypt), I think the MGM has the wildlife cafe, there is the spice trail, if you can stand the heat outside, we stayed in the camelot one, they had a fantastic show, all knights on horses jousting and eating your meal with your fingers ;D
you cannot get small portions , we ended up eating starters for meals , anyway, you will love it ;D
From one who hates Holidays, I have been to Las VEgas. We went there for 2 nights in 1981 during a big tour of California, Nevada and Arizona. We both hated it. It was yuk yuk. I suppose you could call it an experience but certainly not one we want to repeat. My favourite place was Yosemite National Park. To date, it is the most beautiful place on earth and I live in Scotland. I enjoyed seeing the Grand Canyon as well and the drive through the Nevada Desert and through Death Valley, but not Las Vegas. Best of luck Jeannine.
Daughter Lorna, Grandson Joshua (14) and his Dad went last year (a prize grandson's Dad won from work) They did the flight over Grand Canyon and the sky walk. Absolutely loved it. Grandson just loved all the hotels with all the "over the top things". They are not gamblers but said it was a real experience.
i went for three day in 2005,with work, back in my touring days,it was a unique place to visit, and as others have said, the grand canyon is amazing,i wouldnt go on my hols there though, milions of other places id prefer
Hi thank you all so much, you have given me some good ideas. The trip comes with a copter tour down to the bottom the canyon , sadly Bette Midler who I wanted to see leaves at the end of this month, one reason for going oops .Yosemite sounds like a great idea, must admit yhe idea of the canyon at sundown sounds smashing but we probably will be there earlier .
I was determined to book somewhere in April but dare not go too far just yet, hoping for Hawaii for Christmas but John is turning his nose up. The Vegas trip was a anniversary surprise so he didn't get any imput in it, it was family that were telling me it was a place not to miss..they seem to go there all the time.
Thank you all again

Yes, and I'd never go again. My wife and I had the misfortune to land up 'behind the scenes' and saw all those poor people who have lost everything, cannot go home because of it, have no money to eat, cannot pay their fare home, walk around in tatters, etc. We stayed in a motel a little way outside the 'city' and were warned not to stray from the main roads, (which we did). We've been to India and Sri Lanka but the poverty there is nothing to what we saw in the back roads of Las Vagas, Los Angeles and Long Beach. The nicest place we went to was Carmel, so pleasant that we stayed four nights. Then you musn't give Sequoia National Park a miss, nor Zion.
hubby and i went 2 years ago and loved it it is so OTT, we did the grand canyon helicopter tour which was totally amazing
we were only there for 3 or so days which in my opinion was enough not being a gambler had a go on the slots just to say we had done it though
if like me you love people watching it is an amazing place
just go in all the hotels along the strip i really enjoyed nothing to pay just go in and look
At the hilton hotel there was also the star trek experience
this was great
Hoover dam and up into the Grand Canyon.
i was there for 3 days not long enough i want to go back one day
Went in 1972. Grand canyon fabulous. We could not believe it people ran off the airplane to start using the slot machines. Lights at night good. Plane burst two tyres on take off so we circled round the Hoover Dam several times Lake Mead an amazing sight.
Walked down into the canyon. You had to pass a test to get a wilderness pass. I would not pass now.
Liked Yosemite better,
go look at the dancing waters at night, the bellagio, I think, plus, caesar's palace is amazing, for a bit of fun, they have a pirate battle at night, can't remember which hotel that is at ;D
It's AMAZING!! Whether or not you like it you will be blown away by the sheer scale of everything, there is quite simply nowhere quite like it! I went with my OH when we lived in the USA, stayed at Caesar's Palace and although not gamblers by any stretch of the imagintaion we had a bit of fun throwing the dice on the roulette table. Watch the fountain displat at bellagio and the boats at the venetian. Yosemite is incredible and worth a drive if you hire a car. You could also drive to Grand canyon but for a special trip you can take a helicopter. No matter what anyone else says it really is a once in a lifetime experience. I wouldn't want to go back but I'm so glad I've been, wouldn't have missed it for anything!! Have a fab time! Oh and if you are staying at a big hotel on the strip they will have a concierge who can arrange all sorts of trips and shows for you. ;D

Ah! Treasure Island. There was a volcano that lit up the night! And we saw a roller coaster ride around the top of New York New York. There is a micro brewery there in a hotel (I think) but it was off the strip. The Tropicana was giving a free pull on a one armed bandit on the walk way. There was a type of bungee jump behind the MGM where people were strapped in a "bag" and were swung from a height. There was a light show in the old strip in town, well worth a watch at night (well it was). We enjoyed people watching, so much to see! If you can just walk around and watch. We went in 1997. Caesars palace had a roman theme. One hotel had a big big fish tank behind the reception desk this was done because it calmed down angry customers. The Imperial had a museum of American cars covering two floors and that was worth a visit.
We lost 20 dollars on the machines. Well we had to play them once.
Go there and enjoy.#
Regards Bill
;D
Treasure Island.
stayed there
Everything is large, hotels inside are free to visit I stayed in the Circus Circus Hotel but the best I found was the Venetian with the twenty foot gondoliers floating down a twenty foot wide river the best, we didn't get around everything in one week and avoided the flight over the hoover dam as the plane couldn't get low enough because of the gusting winds that week.
I also loved to see how the police zoomed around the car parks early in the mornings on there well equipped bikes they were like wasps flying around.
Oddly enough there is a report in today's Daily Telegraph, (28th) about the hidden poverty in Las Vegas of which I wrote here on the 26th.

I have been 3 times and loved it each time there are always new hotels and new entertainmments to see, do the trip exploring the hoover damm..........still amazed by the fact that the concrete is still not set. and also saw something on the news the other day that Vegas may run out of water in just 8 years, water level is down by 120ft since the last time i went there. Oh and btw you dont have to bet I lost just 10 dollars over the three times I have been.
enjoy your trip xx
