Title: When to sow runner beans for the Plant Sale?
Post by: Squash64 on January 23, 2010, 17:24:55
I want to grow some pots of runner beans to sell at our Plant Sale, around 15/16th May.
When would be the best time to sow the seeds so the plants will be a good size on the sale day?

Last year I sowed mine on April 14th, they were germinated ten days later and I planted them out on May 16th.  Don't really know the variety since I've saved my own beans for years, but I reckon 4-5 weeks before is ample. Hope this helps.

I reckon 3 weeks, 4 max: as after this they start to twine together and are a nightmare to plant...  :-\

What sort of runner beans will you be planting and do you need any pots?

Sorry, missed this one yesterday...

I have seeds of Mergoles, Painted Lady, White Lady, Scarlet Emperor and Enorma.  Other people might have different ones.

Pots are always useful  :)

Are you thinking of coming to the plant sale?  We haven't finalised the date yet but it will probably be 15th May.
