There seems to be a bit of a problem with the home computer at the moment.
When I'm online, I can hear it start to churn away and I can't get anything online to work. It doesn't lose the connection but there's obviously something going on because I can hear it if you see what I mean? It happens about four or five times an hour and lasts for about two or three minutes and then goes back to normal. Also, I've noticed that some things are not closing down properly when I close them. IE, if I have ACDSee open and then I close it, it looks as if I have but when I open up the task manager, it will still be running. Same with Maxthon, CCleaner etc. Why would that be? Bitdefender and our other security progs haven't picked anything up and I'm loathe to think it's a virus anyway - mainly because the security on here is like fort knox but also because of the way this problem is occuring.
My OH is a computer whizz but he's so busy at the moment, I don't like to ask, LOL (especially if it's something I might have done, lolol)
Any ideas? We've got Windows XP and my internet browsers are IE or Maxthon (no lectures on my browsers thank you, I'm more than happy with them!)
Thanks for any help :)
Edit: It isn't freezing in any other areas other than when I'm online.
SL,
If you're happy with your browser------you shouldn't be.
Read the previous posts to find out why.

I personally haven't used Internet Explorer since Mozilla Firefox come out, but as you said in your post, I won't give you grief about your choice in browser :P
Anyway, your computer making "churning" noise and slowing down could be contributed to a number of problems. One thing I would suggest you do first to eliminate any background programs from being a contributor to your problem is this:
Click Start
Click Run
Type MSCONFIG
Click on the Startup tab
Click on Disable All
Click Apply and then Click OK
Click on Restart Now
When your computer restarts, you will get a dialog message with regards to you using MSCONFIG. There will be a box that will say "Do not show this message on startup again", or words to that effect. Click that box and click on OK.
I would then test to see if this solves your problem. If you have programs that you want loading up when your computer loads up, you can obviously follow the steps above and tick the programs in the Startup tab so that they startup when your computer starts up.
If that fails to solve the problem, could you post back with details on how long the problem has been apparent for?
I had a very similar problem. I disabled the service KService, which is something to do with iplayer. It means that iplayer won't work on that pc but it does mean that it starts online very quickly, and doesn't appear to freeze. Kservice seems to be some sort of peer to peer service, so your pc is being used to distribute iplayer services to other people.
Try this brilliant little programme.
Its called winpatrol and has a simple interface that allows you to chose what loads at start up.
Download it from here and see what's loading.
Its also a good way of stopping unwanted programmes loading as you have to give permission for stuff to be installed.
Worth a try. chose the free version still good from here
