Title: chicken limping
Post by: marc555 on January 20, 2010, 18:39:50
I have 4 chickens and noticed on monday when i let them out of their run that 1 of them was limping a bit, I've checked everynight since and its just the same, I'm still getting 4 eggs a day and ive seen it eating and drinking so should I worry about it at all, I have noticed under its wing i has had a small injury which has now scabbed over so its not getting pecked at but what could it be

It could have just caught it on a bush or similar, I would advise washing it with warm salt water and keep an eye, if the others see find it they will peck away at it, mine often brune each other so an injured one needs to be taken out till healed. They can be very canibalistic!

Ive checked again today still a slight limp but its happy enough, its scratching around in the soil etc and still laying. Still a scab on the wound so hasn't been pecked at for the last 3 days that i've checked

I wouldnt worry !

Last year I accidently kicked one of my hens whilst running down the garden with them all following!!!! I felt really bad as she wouldnt walk on one leg at all, kept holding it up all the time, just 'hopping' to get food.  But after a few days she started to use it a bit and eventually everything was fine !  I'm much more careful now !!!
