Title: An English newspaper and an English gossip magazine?
Post by: Hyacinth on January 18, 2010, 18:23:50
....that was the Special Request for the next time I vist the US made by Miss Joanne, the driver of my g'daughter's Yellow School Bus ...

I don't know that I'll be going back before winter, so I've been giving this some thought of what I can post before then...any input, please?

At first I thought a local (to Brum) paper and I know that we've got other Brummie members here, so....Sunday Mercury? But I've googled and....dunno, seems more sports-based than anything (or at least on the on-line edition :-\) A national paper, then, for her?.....Daily Mail, p'raps? For this lady a Page 3 paper won't be atorl appropriate, so I'm looking for an easy-read...if the Daily Mail,  is there a particular day that's better to buy than another?

Now then, the English gossip magazine - ( you know, the one you never buy but always ask for at the hairdressers, laydees  ;)) - really haven't a clue, here, but I'm looking for something that's UK/EU-biased rather than an 'international' one, which, obviously, she can buy at the check-out at her local supermarket....

I'd really appreciate some input here, please.

Many thanks,

Lishka

This old adage about the British Press might help your choice:

The Times is read by the people who run the country.
The Daily Mirror is read by the people who think they run the country.
The Guardian is read by the people who think they ought to run the country.
The Morning Star is read by the people who think the country ought to be run by another country.
The Independent is read by people who don't know who runs the country but are sure they're doing it wrong.
The Daily Hate is read by the wives of the people who think they used to run the country and are rather bitter.
The Financial Times is read by the people who own the country.
The Daily Express is read by the people who think the country ought to be run as it used to be run.
The Daily Telegraph is read by the people who still think it is their country.
And the Sun's readers don't care who runs the country providing she has big t ****.

Apologies in advance to "that" newspapers readers, yes I did slip in my own appraisal  ;)

The (thisis*****) * county is online for most areas.  I look in to my old home town this way.  As a child I lived in south africa and my GP's used to parcel up the weeks papers and send them over.  My dad offered the same thing when I emmigrated but one click and I can read the news online.

As for the gossip, all the glossies have a publication in their own country.  It depends on if she prefers pop, royal or news as to what you send.

Just remember when you post it to ask for 'printed paper rate' as this is much cheaper (assuming it still exists).

Thanks Cocs, I'd reckon she'd like stuff bout the Royals cos loads of Americans are obsessed with them (specially the Diana Conspiracy theories ::) ;D)? And yep, I remember bout printed postal rates...

Carbonel, thanks for your post - whilst being v. clever, it hasn't really helped me, tho :-[....this lady isn't English, you see, so your categories don't really apply :-\

Send a good sunday paper, they have magazines as well. Plus if you send it around about the first of may there is a good chance on some quaint old english customs being reviewed. Morris dancing in the may etc.

The trouble is, this year is going to be full of electioneering.

Hmmm...maybe you could send her a few local rags-I could send you a Stafford Express and Star and get my mum to keep me a Blackpool paper, you could send a Brum paper etc. My American friend likes the Times because of the Obits and letters to the editor and says it's so British.
I don't read gossip mags but I imagine British Hello! would go down quite well-I know they have their own but it won't be the same as ours will it? You could also send Heat or one of the more 'downmarket' ones for a larf. If you want to really crack her up then send Take a Break. The top tips are to die for.  :)
If you want her never to speak to you again send Viz.  :)
