Okay, you're on your desert island. You have the bible, the complete works of Shakespeare and whatever luxury item (mine would be a lighter!)... But if they allowed you one "herb" & one "spice", what would they be?
I think mine would be Cayenne Chilli pepper & Oregano.
Basil and Ginger... :)
Basil and Cardamoms.
Basil and cumin
rosemary and cinnamon ;)
Oregano & cinnamon, I'm assuming black pepper is not classed as a spice
Oh my! I'm so glad I'm not!!! I really can't choose - so many are quite indispensable. :-[ :-[ basil, thyme, rosemary, ginger, chilli, cardamom, parsley, cumin.........
I have about 50 different herbs and spices in my kitchen. How could I leave them?
Good thread Ollie! Good on you.
(btw I'd need to take my cocker spaniel, the kitten and my iphone!)
Graaah! ;D Basil and chilli
Herb easy - Oregano. Spice less so - Chili or Cumin
Chilli and corriander.
Can I swap the bible for Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid.
;D
basil and baby spice :D
Think you might be better off leaving Basil behind GB! ;) ;) ;D ;D
herb would have to be rosmary . to put on my roasted lamb
. spice would have to be papricka . to put on my prawn cocktal starter
I cannot believe no-one has said garlic for their herb, yet. That would be mine and cumin for my spice.
G x
Tumeric and chilli

oh yes garlic garlic garlic !!! :)
I don't regard garlic as a herb.
Coriander and Ginger Yummmmm
(I'm classing garlic and chili as veggies/fruit)
Yes for me garlic is more a vegetable than a herb, perhaps because it's an allium? Hence not included. It would certainly be something I wouldn't like to do without!!
Cumin seed and bay leaf :)
Ninny
I'm gonna cheat and say Thai 7 spices and Herbes de Provence. It's only two jars after all and it's too difficult to choose otherwise :P ;D.
Tricia
parsley and black pepper :P :P :P
The spice would have to be pepper but I am not sure about the herb.
Corriander, I can use the seeds the leaves and the root, as with fennel (which is nice with fish). I prefer parsley to corriander leaves. Basil may not grow to well and there wont be tomatoes.
Are the books to be used for fire lighting because I sure as sure wont be reading them. A copy of a survival manual would be far more useful.
I second the vote for Rosemary and Cinnamon
I use them all the time, but not together ;D
Whatever you call it but definitely Garlic.
Mint, have grown so many different types and have it hanging in bunches drying, don't know if it will be any good but have run out of containers. :)
Rosemary because I love the smell so much......plant some by the front door to keep the goblins out. ;D
rosemary for all the wild animals I'd have to cook and eat, plus chilli as I am addicted to it and it can make the most boring thing more interesting!
I wonder what the definition of herb and spice is, if there is one. For example, I would think of coriander leaves as a herb but crushed coriander as a spice. Is it as simple as that?
I tend to think that spices come from seeds and bark (and at a push some roots although I tend to regard these as flavourings) and herbs come from leaves and the stems of herbaceous plants.
Cayenne Pepper and Chives......... ;)
Baby spice :P

Too bad! Grotbag's booked her already! ;D ;D :P
Chilli and garlic (if garlic counts as a herb!)
