i still have a lot of plants in the garden brussels, sprouting, cabbage cauli etc will they survive? they seem to be in suspended animation

No reason why they shouldn't... even if they are under a good layer of snow... it acts as a bit of a blanket... think "Igloo"...  :)

garlic needs cold weather to get the cloves to form properly...and it grows in Siberia too, it should be fine....

I would guess that hungry animals and birds are more of a threat than the weather.
