Title: Someone, somewhere, somehow......
Post by: tim on January 07, 2010, 17:43:02
I just HAVE to replace my rusting 40 y/o spatula.
Can't find one anywhere.
Can't draw, but it's something like this below.

Springy, sligtly concave plated blade which will slip under anything, & even scoop up spilt liquids.

An absolute MUST!!

Find me 2 & you'll get one free!!

Tim I have a Nick Nairn board scraper. I saw it on ready steady cook & was very impressed with it. I bought it for 2 of our daughters too. It's square stainless steel, very pliable. I use it to transfer things from chopping board to pan. You can have a look at it on his cookery school site under utensils.

Lots of near misses - for which MANY thanks - & don't the Americans always heve the best of everything!

But it's still the concave scoopability which sets mine off against all others.

Tim, there's a company named "Chef''n" that make silicone coated spatulas (they have a stainless steel core). I saw one with a similar shaped 'blade' as yours in Selfridges, it was even slightly concave.

I can't find it online, so suspect it may have been a discontinued model; however, John Lewis carry some of the Chef'n range, maybe they'll have 'old' stock on the shelves instore.

Good luck! I have some of my mothers cooking implements and know they would be irreplaceable today  :'(

Can you see a make on it?

GrannieAnnie - yes but I think Tim would have more use for a spatula than our Colin......  ;)  :D

Thanks for all that. I'm sure it will not be wasted.

Reasons why I would pay very good money for 'mine' are;

Can slce a Pizza/Cake.
Can serve a slice.
Can slip under any stuck-on item.
Has small & large holding area.
Can scoop up liquids.

Just cannot believe that such a tool could be discontinued.

Tim, what is yours made of, stainless steel?
Thinking of the clever Danish design in cookware, might it have been Danish?

Sadly, plated - hence its demise.

I haven't ever tried this product for replating, maybe it is worth looking into? Sounds expensive unless you have many things to replate.

I searched for 'concave spatulas' and found these

Maybe, just maybe - so sad to have to give up a loved kitchen tool or appliance.

Like a fool, Grannie, I binned it - they were so easy to get in the olden days.

Again, many thanks for all the steers.

PS By 'holding area', I mean that you have the tip for little things & the main body for larger.

The simple truth is, you wont replace it exactly.

These little kitchen aids we make our favourites become like an additional appendage and some one else with that same tool most likely wont find it as perfect as you did.

My mother had a pallate knife she used for all sorts. I thought it was rubbish.

I had a potato peeler which some one bent trying to use it for a tool it was never intended for and I have never found another like it.

In fact, with use, that spatula thingy probably became moulded to your hand, and wrist movement like a realy well worn comfortable pair of footwear. If you get my meaning.

Give it a good send off and grieve.

Tim,

If you send in pics to Lakeland they do make obselete implements. A friend of mine did it successfully. Worth a try?

Tim, I think they were made by prestige but I am not sure.  I have two, both rusting and not used for food these days.

They are brilliant for scraping flour and bits of pastry up when you have finished rolling out, gets rid of all the gunge before you clean.  And as you say for so many other jobs, including lifting joints out of roasting tins, perfect for serving pies, cheesecakes etc.  One has an orange handle and the other a brownish colour.

Our cookery teacher taught us to do eveything with them.  I have been looking for ages so might get in touch with Lakeland too.

Am amazed to see this thread as I so much want to replace them.

Thank you,

T.

I have lost my camera so can't take a photo at the moment!  I am sure they are the same, with the rivets across the scoop part.

I knew it!!  Ours was brown.

How bad are they? Might we do a deal??

Hi Tim,

They are too bad for food use now I am afraid, so not really Tim, I'm sorry, wouldn't want to be the cause of any illness in your home.  But I am now convinced I will send one to Lakeland and see if they can do anything.  I spent ages just going through google images last night to see if I could even find a photo of one but to no avail so there must be no-one producing them any more.  It was the fact that they were flexible as well as strong and could be used for so many things - it is why I needed two as I used them so much and was always washing them up!

I will let you know how I get on.

Hope all is well with you and Mrs Tim

After all the advertising on here about this miracle tool you could probably go into production and end up in profit.
