Title: Fruit plants
Post by: PaulaB on January 05, 2010, 12:34:07
I have just taken delivery of 20 raspebrry plants, 6 current bushes and 2 gooseberry bushes due to the snow its probably not safe to plant them, but if not where is the best place to store them? outside still in the wrapping or in the garage either in or out of the packaging?

I'd put them in the garage, since freezing may not be altogether good for the roots. Hopefully it won't be long!

Its now 4 days later how much longer before I have to plant them or loose them.

If you have them in the garage and that has a concrete floor I would put some water onto the roots then soak newspaper and wrap the roots with that and last cover the whole lot to keep the frost away. If you move the snow off an empty piece of soil you will find the frost is only in the top few inches and you could bury the roots in soft soil until you can plant them later. I did at one time work in a nursery as packing shed foreman and at this time of year could have plants lifted for a long time before dispatch.

Just to let you know the plants have been in the ground for a week now (it turns out I got 21 rasperries not 20) and are all fine.
