just wondering-has anyone had a frost yet?
it occurred to me that november is nearly upon us, and i thought where i live in leicestershire would have experienced one-but no, not yet!
(have i jinxed it now?!)
bbc weather warned a while ago of possible frosts, but they haven't materialised.
We have had wet and windy weather in the North East, even the odd nip in the air, but no frost. Think it has been fairly mild so far this year in comparison to some winters. Hope we are both not tempting fate Kerry. ;D busy_lizzie
Extension roof was white on Tuesday morning 26th Oct. BUT strangely enough the Dahlias down the garden, say 70 metres away are still healthy and blooming away. The ones by the house were blackened.

Strange one that Eric. All down to microclimates I suppose.
We havent had a frost yet. One night earlier this week (tuesday i think) I thought we might get one, but it never amterialised (hadnt been forecast, not that really means anything though).
With the local climate down here such as it is we dont get many autumn frosts, and with it so wet and mild, not likely to for a while yet. The dahlias etc will go on for a time yet though the wet has spoiled the last flowers. I think they are more likely to rot away with wet than get frosted!
Wet and windy here in Herts, but so far no frosts. Dahlias, fuchsias, marigolds, busy lizzies, gailardias all still going strong. Even have a couple of lovely flowers spikes on the delphiniums. Amazing how much colour there still is in the garden for the time of year. Did see a holly bush packed with berries today so if the old wives tales are true, we are probably in for a very bad winter :o
Pat
So many berries on bushes here too, really noticable this year. Wonder when this cold snap is going to kick in, no signs of it yet here. busy_lizzie
We finally got our first frost last night- cut down the tender stuff away from the house. Only about a month late! Saw Impatiens still in bloom in the town 25km south of here earlier this evening though. Perhaps in a week the U.K. will get this weather- beautiful cold moonlit nights and crisp fall days.
Glorious day here today, but although clear no forecast of frost tonight.
Pat you are lucky to have your dahlias still going strong. I may have already mentioned it the wet has finished mine off I think, I noticed today a few had even died right back. Seems excessive wet can finish dahlias as sure as any frost can. I have decided NOT to keep any in the ground over winter as I had planned, as i fear the wet climate here will simply rot them away :( .
Oh well i shall continue to wait for Jack to come calling, then.
We had a hard frost on Tuesday which took till lunchtime to shift, but have had nothing since! The dahlias are still okay and even the streptocarpus is still flowering away outside.
Nothing in this part of sunny Essex yet. Garden still looks almost summery! Willow and Robinia still covered in leaves. Hope it stays dry, the lawn looks like a shag piles.
I don't think we've had one yet on London/Essex border. A few times I've noticed the cars down our road have a coating on them in the morning - but it's more dew than frost (unless it'd melted already by then).
All my tender plants are in (oh heck - I just realised I've forgotten about my canna - but it's still got leaves on it).
I can't believe it's November already.
My canna is still out Aqui - in fact it is still blooming ::) I have it in a large pot so can quickly get it in if frost is forecast.
Pat
Took in my dahlias, jasmine and streptocarpus today as dahlias showed signs of frost on their leaves. Rats! Have forgotten the cannas and it is a braw bricht monnlit nicht the nicht! :(
Had our first proper frost last night. A real white one, though not very penetrating or damaging strangely enough. My remaining half hardies including dahlias were unaffected, despite being in an open area of the garden. Most Odd. ???
Kind of adds weight to my theory that some so-called tender plants can take more cold/frost under certain conditions than they are supposed to.
well, first frost 'proper' on fri/sat night.
having an early sart for work saturday morning there was quite a layer on the car. >:(
going round the garden yesterday there was quite a difference-the cape gooseberry and runners were all 'wilted' and the dahlia leaves all blackened.
i found it amazing the transformation a few hours could make.
i had decided during the day on friday to take in my orange plant-i was certainly thankful i did that!
First frost here at the weekend. The brave Cosmos got stopped in their tracks (shame, they were still going strong) and that was the end of the annuals...CLx
