any one tried this. going to sow carrots using the rotorvater. the plan is . till the bed to get the soil very fine and fluffy. then rake into a mound. a bit like earthing up spuds, then sow carrots on top of mound
I'd be concerned about fly in the shoulders as the soil settled... :-X
saddad...would fleece solve the prob. and get bed ready in march and sow end of april?

I dont see any thing wrong in that method but i think would allow te soil to settle first. The problem wont be the fly getting to the carrots if you fleece them but whats in your soil prior to starting to job.
We did this with parsnips with good success. Rotivated and then raked out and sowed the seed. Didn't put it in a mound. Our soil is quite good though so not sure if it made any real improvement.
Hi JTW,
This has worked for me in the past. Our soil has quite a lot of clay in it and caps badly when its dry. Do just as you say, mound the earth up as you would for spuds, then i make a shallow grove along the top and sprinkle in the seeds. I use this method for most of my root crops
I raked into a mound after they had really got going, there you go Jimbo 7 replys, lets see if we can get into double figures. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Sometimes I think I'm the only person that likes the taste of Resistafly........
Morning,
I found that sowing spring onions or shallots inbetween the carrots keeps carrot fly away. Dont know if this helps at all but always willing to put my 2 pence in!!
I like the idea of this mound plan. Been waiting to see what others say in case there was any obvious problems eg watering. I shall try it next year.
One of our chaps sows carrots in drills as normal, but then earths them up as they grow. He gets really good results.

As long as they remain moist while germinating the taproot will speed down chasing the moisture... they can grow in almost pure sand...
