I listened to Home Truths last night (the repeat with David Stafford), and was looking forward to hearing John at the weekend.

We grew up hearing John on the radio. He was so original and made no compromises with his musical tastes. You knew he was the genuine article and his enthusiasm never faltered.

My sister lived in the same village in Suffolk as John and his family.  Danda, Johns daughter used to babysit for her, and my sister said what a close family they were. Sheila is a lovely woman and she and John were devoted to each other. It will be a devastating blow to them all.  John had been diagnosed with diabetes not so long ago, but seemed to be coping very well with it. So a very sad day. busy_lizzie

Milk and Alcohol... first time i listened to John Peel, and he played that Dr feelgood number.. he impressed me then, and I don't believe he ever "sold out" was always himself and to me he symbolises a deep caring individual who likes to rock.. gonna play that song tonight... good on ya John

Gutted - I've been listening to John Peel for a very long time, Radio 1, World Service for years abroad, and then Radio 4.  Hard to imagine that anyone could have such a wildly eclectic taste in music - from Pink Floyd to Mongolia.

Yes - RIP.

All best - Gavin

I cant think of a better thread to break my posting cherry on.
What can I say about Peelie?
A great loss to everyone.
He'll be watching the great gig in the sky tonight though. I hope Kurt, Jim, Bob and Elvis put on a good show for him.

Not often that two generations in a family can enjoy listening to the same dj, so thank's John for helping to bridge the gap.   Really liked his dry wit and gentle "putting down" of the pretentious...

Lovely man.... I remember his support for a local landmark in the 'Restoration' series and his comment that there were not nearly enough 'leaning' towers in the country.Dry and rye.

It's very sad, isn't it.  Don't normally feel this way about a "famous person" but he was exceptional.

I thinks that the crux of it.  He was never a 'famous' person, he was always himself!  I remember him from Radio Caroline and right through to Radio 4.  Never changed, never gave in to peer pressure, was true tp himself and his fans.  Quite a rare individual!  Hope Sheila feels the same cos it might help.  Will miss him loads!
